I'm going to attempt to forge a camping tripod and I have 2 weeks till we go .
And I need to know
1. what steel would be best for the job
2. where to get the steel
3. alternatives to consider
Any help would be brilliant

I would also like to make a gypsie hook like this one gypsie hook.jpg

I have made a load of fire tripods and sold them to friends over the years. I recycle old camera tripods. They close up to a small pack size and the old ones don't have any plastic or many aluminum parts in the wrong place. I have hung a 4 gallon cast iron cooking pot off them, with no problems. The old brass telescopic type are easy to convert as its just a matter of unscrewing the center screw and screwing in a eyebolt through the same hole. Hang chain to this with a butchers hook.

As Dave said, mild steel you can pick some up from b&q or check out themetalstore. Their service was impressive.

Only trouble with buying steel from a hardware store is that it is a very expensive way of doing things. Wickes and homebase will stock steel as well.

if you have a local scrap yard you would get some there, they would probably let you have some road steaks for nout....

or re-bar is your next best bet and again would be free or near as dam it....:)

It's late now as I've been to the woods but I want to knock up a tripod soon .
For my next venture out .
