Bushcrafty Plans for 2019

Well, I just sat down with my calendar to put some planning dates in. If I don't do it now half the year has gone and I still won't have done anything. So, in no particular order:
1) attend the Winter Bushmoot - a first for me
2) I have two canoe treks planned, one local the other in Scotland
3) a weekend deer tracking in local woods to determine presence and species
4) a backback in Snowdonia (while I still can - at least, I think I can!)
5) continue the UK coast overland trek - at least 4 weeks, maybe 6
6) leathercraft, wittling, stick dressing, spoon carving, knife making, axe refurbishment, greenwood furniture making ......
6) and, of course, as many nights as possible in our wood whilst we continue the biodiversity survey
Oh dear, maybe that's two years' of planning!

Oh dear, maybe that's two years' of planning!
This year will comprise of more of the same for me:
- For the third year running, I'll aim to camp out at least once a month.
- Practice/refine my whittling skills and produce a set of kitchen utensils
- Undertake some more long distance hikes and wild camps. Need to complete the North Downs Way
- Camp out in one of our National Parks - Dartmoor
- Continue to volunteer with my local woodland trust
- Continue to practice bushcraft skills - particular focus on Tree/Plant ID and fire lighting
- Post more regularly on my blog and diversify the content from the same old trip reports that I usually publish.
I'm going to try to carve more - and better - spoons, get to know Sutherland more intimately, get fitter, spend more time out and about, spend less on stuff that I really don't need and walk the Cape Wrath Trail again.
If I manage a fraction of those things, it'll be an achievement!

Smallholding and countrycrafty rather than strictly bushcrafty plans for 2019 include;
Finishing planting the 600 metres of native hedgerow I’ve been working at since mid-December - some in rather challenging ground. Could do with a bit of rain (preferably at night) as ground is quite dry and no repeat of last summer’s drought.
Five day hedgelaying course (starting next weekend) to start getting the existing neglected hedges into shape later in the year and hopefully in due course to manage the new hedging.
Finish the beekeeping course I started in the autumn - the hands (gloves!) on part starts in the spring and clean up and paint the secondhand beehives I picked up (from reputable source) and make new frames ready for 2019 season.
Have another go at charcoal making - a couple of half-@rsed efforts last autumn produced one over and one undercooked batches so by a process of elimination.....
See whether I can persuade Mrs Nomad that a vintage tractor is a necessity rather than an indulgence - not crossing my fingers so will settle for:-
Getting out hillwalking a lot more and significantly improving bird, tree, plant, fungi etc. ID skills - it’s amazing how many more things appear when I’m walking around with friends from Wildlife Trusts than are there when I walk around on my own!

Be warned though, now you'll want to spend all your money on beekeeping equipment too and it doesn't come cheap. But it's a great opportunity to make your own stuff if so inclined.In case you didn't know: most people use a blowtorch to go over second hand kit.

Thanks. I got lucky with picking up a couple of hives and kit including a couple of Sherriff suits from members of the local BKA who were giving up for health reasons. One hive (which came with a load of unused and unmade frames) and the suits was at a really good price.
Waiting for a delivery of stuff from Thorne’s winter sale and that should be it - for a while, apart from a couple of nucs.
Also have a top bar left behind by a previous owner which I will clean up and keep in case I need to e Pandora.
Will be applying fire and ice to everything.
Still lots to get my head around but there is a very active local association.
Nice! I just upgraded to a Sherriff suit myself. You'll want as many empty hives spare as you have with bees to cope with splits and swarming (i.e. if you have 2 colonies you want two spare hives in the shed) or at least some spare nuc boxes.Thanks. It can drive you to despair sometimes, trying to figure out how to best manage them, but few things are as calming and meditative as inspecting a friendly hive.
What I’m gonna do is sleep over more, I’m down the farm shooting in the woods or fishing nearly every weekend of my life near Loch Lomond, having it on your doorstep and permission makes it difficult to stay overnight when you can just go home at tea time, just need the motivation.

My living history work contains many skills that might be considered bushcraft, when I go camping I use many skills that might be considered living history. When I set out to make something in the workshop I use both skill sets. I use outdoor skills when I take a photographic tour, I use camping skills when I go to a festival and I use all of these skills when I set up a Steam Tent Camp.
I will be doing all of these things and more in 2019 and hopefully for the rest of my life too.
For me it's just part of living a life less ordinary.
