I kind of surfed into the site nearly twenty years ago.....and was amazed and delighted.....there were all these people doing things I loved, happy to share, happy to talk and advise and pass on information and suggestions, and......I thought Tony had done such a good thing setting up the site to let us meet up around this virtual campfire.

Over the years we've met up, had a blether around innumerable real campfires, but this one's still alight :)

It's still full of those kinds of people and conversations that appealled to very much to me all those years ago.

My only puzzle was trying to work out what the heck a bushcrafter was, because I hadn't a clue. The first Scottish meet up the others cheerfully showed me Ray Mears' stuff, and his 'bushcraft'.
I realised that it meant very different things to very different folks, but it always sort of revolved around natural resources, of understanding natural resources, how and when and why.

Tony and Shelly had badges made of the BcUK leaf, and I still have mine, sewn on a NF fleece over fifteen years ago and it's still sound, still neat and not screaming in-your-face just subtly this is BcUK's badge sort of thing.
I like it.

I like JonathanD's herpotological one too though :)

Maybe instead of designing an Icon that suits everybody/bushcraft, folks might design one that suits them and their bushcraft ?
My own Avatar came from just such an exercise so long ago, and those wee characters used to be all over the forum. Everybody designed their own. Folks pass on, folks drift, they change their minds....there are still some of them around.
I think if I changed mine now no one would recognise me :)
It's the wee teacher from South Park, dressed in OD, with long brown hair, green eyes, purple hat and a she even has a wee knife in her hand. It was me :)

So, go on then; design your own Avatar/Icon and let's see them up on the posts

Nope you can’t change your avatar now. It’s been you for years. It’s a shame the new forum software has reduced avatars down to such a small less defined and cropped image than they used to be. Many of the avatars on here are as familiar as the faces of my family and close friends.

Oh dear deary me. How very predictable.
Whether you like it or not we are on a web site and all using the title “Bushcraft”.

OF COURSE. We all interpret that term differently. Everyone interprets their world differently - no one’s semantics are identical. There is a little more hope with iconography.

I’ve seen it soooooooo many times in so many spheres: people not wishing to be labelled. If you don’t give me a label then I shall apply one to you without any conscious thought just as you are applying one to me as you read this post.

Icon? As someone who has no idea what Bushcraft might be and is getting little guidance, an initial scan of this site label it as a specialist cutlery site. Knives feature far more frequently than any other subject. This effectively excludes me as I am able to camp and cook from scratch on my Kelly Kettle without a knife other than the serrated edge of my spork.

I certainly see a knife as a bushcraft icon before anything green.

A condescending and fairly closed minded response to what was feedback , replies and responses to your OP.

Well done - I'm suitably impressed.

Oh it's ancient.
Ehm, must have been 2007 or 2008, I think.
So, fifteen years :)

I still have the purple shirt, it's been repaired so often that it's as soft as silk but only fit now for painting :)
The Rohan green shirt is still sound, still looks good too.
I think I'm on my fifth or sixth hat since then though.

Does anyone know wherefrom this word ended into British English? I don't quite remember UK forest resembling "bush" the exception being rhodo bush in Ireland.

The reality is that quite a few here on BCUK started out on this journey before RM made it commercial; hell, before he was out of his nappies. We called it backwoods skills or wilderness skills.

You're absolutely right; we don't have 'bush' as in African bush or Australian bush. We have scrub and woods. Imagine if RM had called it Scrubland Skills, would people be trying to say 'I'm going Scrublanding this weekend' or 'I'm a Scrublander' :)

Many of the skills described here I first learned as Backwood Camping as a Boy Scout in the 1950’s but that would be a fraction of what is described here.

@TeeDee fire would appear to be significant? No?

I think you’ll find a lot of folk here able to identify with those.
I’m talking from the perspective of being on here for 20 years though. Toddy and many others still have had their same avatar for that long. So I’ve known them longer than my own child. And it’s always great when I’ve taken a break and come back on to find them still chatting away as usual. Sure we’ve lost some prolific members and good friends along the way, but it’s amazing that the community is so strong still and the old stalwarts are still posting regularly.

I don't identify as anything other than me. Bushcrafting I have never done to the best of my knowledge. I've spent decades being in the outdoors, learning and experiencing things. I've learnt a lot on here too, thank you everyone!

If I had to be labelled and march behind a banner, logo or icon I would probably not be here. Outdoors is a freedom to me, freedom of the mind and body. Iconography is the habit of control. What's the most widely known symbols around? How many are linked to control, identity politics, ideology and religion? Those that are not will be linked to consumerism like fizzy drink brands or car brands. Those logos are to identify the product to you or you to the product I don't know which. We buy our favourites and recognise it by the logo or images. Manipulation you could say.

Sorry for my ramble. Best stick with Tony's leaf, I've never really noticed it so that's fine by me. I do however look forward to seeing Toddy's avatar and those of a few others. They mark a positive input most of the time.

PS how can I find out how long I've been on here? I kind of scared to find out how long. It was over 12 years as I have met up with some when I was single up somewhere north of Stirling towards Callander at a campsite that allowed fires. With a guy setting up a portable forge, another guy who likes to walk the WHW and had a zenlike view on coping with midges! Characters all and very friendly to a loner trying to get involved.
