Hey up guys and girls..

Whilst explaining to a work colleague what it is that drags me off into the wilds on wet, windy and snowy days, he simply asked "well when youre doing stuff, do you listen to stuff too?".

I had no reply to this as is I simply listen to whats going on around me, I like the immersion in my surroundings, however, maybe other folk are different. So, does anyone listen to music whilst out? And if so...what?? It just got me thinking.

Random thread I know and if its in the wrong place mods please feel free to move..

Many thanks..

I like some sort of music through headphones in my hammock, I like live music by the fire and none at all when actually bimbling about.

Once upon a time I'd love a good out door party (rave) too.

I prefer the sound of the wild. Though that said, if trying to sleep, or sleeping on a normal campsite, will sometimes listen to music to drown out the sound of anything keeping me awake. But in general, no. Music reminds me too much of the real world.
I image live music by the fire would be excellent.

I was going to post that no, I go outside to get away from human sounds like music, even though there is a lot of music that I enjoy very much.

Then I remembered that I bought myself a small wind-up radio for taking on longer trips. Mainly for news updates, and to listen to cricket commentary, but a bit of classic FM doesn't go amiss of an evening either.

Recorded music? Sometimes but not really. A friend and I have a tradition of playing Bob Marley round the campfire, where his gentle lyrics are well suited. Other music seems brash and clashs and I leave it for the car or at home where I do most of my listening. I like the peace of the outdoors, the lapping of the waters or the rustle of leaves and creak of trees in the wind. Saying that if I am car camping I sometimes take a guitar to have a noodle on.

If i'm with mates, I tend to take some small speakers and we both take our ipods so whatever comes on round the fire...I have to admit "ring of fire" comes on an awful lot :lmao: as does Bob Marley :) But when im alone I much prefer to just sit and read or sketch....nothing nature related, most of it is design ideas for my product design course.

It depends who I go with usually I don't take any music but I have a couple of mates who snore really badly even if they are at the other end of the camp I can still hear them so I take my mp3 player and fall asleep listening to something soothing

I don't listen to music, but I do listen to Radio 4 when out camping. If I can't listen to Any Questions (and the hilarious 'Any Answers' on saturday - those callers are hoax callers, aren't they?) I can throw a right professional strop.
But the TV and radio are the same for me - I watch/listen to the programmes I want to and then turn it off.
So for the most part I don't have anything on when out, just the natural sounds.

eurgh no
i also hate it when freind listen to music outdoors.
it seems to me completely wrong. when outside listen the outside, when inside listen to music,
unless at a party (of course)

It seems i am not alone in generally listening to the surroundings as opposed to putting headphones in. For me i enjoy the quiet and solitude too much. HOWEVER, theres nowt quite like a bit of AC/DC when driving...but thats another thread :O) cheers...

I do enjoy listening to the sound of nature all about me when I'm out but there are occasions, when I'm just out of the dossbag and tidying up and making breakfast I enjoy listening to something or other through small speakers connected to my MP3 player and possibly as background round the fire at a meet when nature is drowned out by the fun & banter that accompanies such gatherings. So I guess what I'm saying in essence is yes but only at certain times & conditions otherwise no.

Pretty much what Rob says, on all counts :)

Live tunes are good if there's somebody willing to perform, other than that I like to listen to some tunes or a book/podcast in my hammock

I've taken my ipod out on several occasions...however once out and about I've never found myself in the right mindset to listen to anything. Just doesn't feel right somehow. I never bother to take it any more.

I listen to really heavy metal, bangin' techno and I've recorded the sound of cars rushing by on the Westway in London with a jet airliner ascending overhead. I like to play these loudly over some portable speakers cranked up to 11.

I've forgotten to unplug my ipod from the car a few times and have paddled out somewhere with just my headphones :tapedshut

I usually listen to audio books when i'm out n about, As for music , something soft to chillout to, so nothing heavy as it tends to give me a headache.

:lmao:
