Hi guys - cooked some bread in an aluminium pot last weekend and needless to say it burnt. Badly.

And now I have cremated remains of bread mix in the pot.

How best can I remove this? A good scrubbing doesn't seem to have shifted it much.

Wire wool?

I have it soaking in vinegar just now.

Any tips appreciated

Andy

Andy, this may sound daft but if you pour in some coca cola and then put it on the hob and slowly simmer it away you will find it starts cleaning the pot up really well, but i take it is the pot you used at Comrie Croft last weekend, you many want to get a few gallons of coke mate!

Aye that's the one! lol.

I'll give that a go mate. If not I'll have to attack it with some wire wool.

Cheers
Andy

Build a fire then when it gets good and hot just turn the pot upside down over it and let it burn the remains out. Fire caused it; fire can fix it.

Do you know the pot-in-a-pot trick for next time, three pebbles in the bottom etc?

Aye - Will be doing that next time. It was just the only pot we had to hand.

I think it'll be a sandpaper job tbh. Water didn't help as the bread was well and truly cremated.

Way back when I was a wee lad, I bought a new fangled stove called a MSR Model 9. It was the first generation of the XGK. Prior to that I used a Svea 123. The first winter trip that I took the MSR on I fired it up and placed my large aluminium pot on it with some dry powder snow in the pot. I went to collect a bootle or cup from my rucksack and when I turned back, the pot had a hole in the bottom, the wet was leaking onto the stove and I was without a means to melt snow. What I learned was that the MSR burned like a rocket motor and that I needed to "prime" the pot with some water before placing directly on the burner. Your lucky all you have is some cleanup to do.

Fill with boiling water and about 2 tablespoons of Washing soda per pint of water... leave to soak overnight

works wonders for me

If all other methods fail, before resorting to power tools I can promise you that green goo will shift it.

Err, sorry. Decarbonising agent. Mine came from the betterware catalog (How embarased am I having to admit that?), but it should be available elsewhere. It stinks, but it will make anything carbon based (burnt grill pans, mildew, crusty ovens, etc) just go away.
