  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Im in the mood for a pair of new gaiters, my old ones are falling apart.

I was wondering if anyone out there uses either of these pairs and can comment on them?

British Army Issue MK2 General Service Woodland camo Gaiters
Are these waterproof, from the description it only mentioned the top nyoln part is.

The second pair that have caught my eye:
British. "M.V.P". CS95. D.P.M
How does the rubber under foot strap work, its it one piece of rubber or is there a button on there. Cant quite see from the picture.

I too use the second lot depending on what I'm doing. They work well and handle bushwhacking a treat...

The first link is the newer version of the second link- with a simplified design for the underfoot strap (basically a bit of paracord and eyelets. I've used both types- they are both generic 'goretex' (the upper panels only). The second link with the wire and rubber underfoot straps are more fragile than the more basic design- i've broken every pair ive owned within a few hours- but that is giving them unusually hard use.

For general use they should both be good options, but are fairly heavy if that is a concern to you.

Not seen the first pair, it says they are 'Woodland Camo' which is generally a US pattern but these are clearly British DPM. I have had the second pair and they are very good, there is a wire conected to rubber straps that go under the instep then buckle over the top. They are a bit of a drag to take on and off but very robust and fine if you are keeping them on all day. The best gaiters I ever had were from Outdoor Research and had no zip at all just a broard velcro piece up the front, you simply step into them, flap them over and Bob's your Uncle, I now have a very similar pair by Mountain Equipment Co-op. I would be reluctant to go back to anything with a zip as they inevitably get bunged up with mud, having said that 99% of gaiters have zips so what do I know! Glyn

My mistake, I haven't used either of those, i have used the older canvas type, still with the cable and rubberised strap.

Never got along with mine, even "modern" gaiters from the "Go Ootside" chain I struggle with.

The reason? Big calves - they're a nightmare wher gaiters are concerned.

And don't mention wellies!!!

I've been trying to get a pair of wellies that'll go over my calf muscles (plus trousers) with no luck for months.

I'm a size 8 but the only boots that will fit over my calves are 10's and above which leave my feet flapping and lonely inside the foot bit.

Three possible solutions;

a) Make my own gaiters.
b) Maybe I should just spray insulating foam down the big wellies and wait till it dries and then pull my feet out.
c) Find a friendly cobbler who'll resole my 20year old wellies without laughing.

Aaargh!!!

I have the same man claves problem, it comes from having to carry every one around you!:) Gaiters

Hahahahaha, along the lines of "I've a sore back - from carrying you, you lazy etc".

I'll just have to sit in the shops rip open the packaging and try a pair till I get some that fit.

Aldi have some black anjle gaiterson sale just now.

The DPM ones are ok to use, once saw a **** wear desert version, while on walkabout with his mutt he was a ****. Could understand if the ground was wet but it was rather dry that month.

I've got a pair of CS95 ones, i've taken them hiking, volunteering on a mossland, paintballing and airsofting and aside from an impressive patina of mud they seriously do the job!
give endicotts a call they'll have your size in no doubt.

Thanks folks. Bit undecided now.
I take it the army don't do them in OG instead of DPM?

Lord Poncho - you mentioned they were quite heavy....how heavy?

I've got Army ones in olive. They've got the rubber/wire cable at the bottom and haven't broke after wearing them for 3 years if that helps. I prefer to wear those to goretex trousers anytime...

Just had a look, definately issue, 1996 size long. I like them as they were sold as goretex but feel more like canvas to me, perfect for bushwhacking as mentioned previously. They've got a drawstring at the top, zip and snaps down the back and cable/rubber strap at the bottom. There's also a hook for your boot laces. Hope that helps, I can pm you some pics if you want.
