I did some pruning of a sycamore at work during the snow in December, and after force drying some of the wood for a month or so in my house, I had my first 'play' with it tonight.

I found a sycamore drill on sycamore hearth produced excellent, long lasting embers - this is now nearly my fave bowdrill setup! (after hazel on Lime).

I found hazel on sycamore was quite poor, i think the sycamore must be marginally harder than the hazel as the drill was grinding away very quickly and barely any wood grinding away from the hearth at all.

Has anyone else had any experiences of Sycamore, or used any other sycamore combinations?

cheers

Yep, Sycamore is quite good, just that bit harder than Willow, poplar and lime, but good to fall back on, and there's Sycamore trees all over the place too, not just in wet areas or nice tree lined streets! :)
