Black squirrel

Yeah i have a couple in the garden sometimes - stripping the Cob nut tree. Cat seems to enjoy chasing the grey ones more - not sure if the black ones are quicker or more aggressive?

So are they just a genetic fault? I ve seen them in Canada, didnt realise they were stomping around here too,

Yeah, melanism occurs in most animals. We have black foxes, snakes, lizards, badgers, rabbits, ets etc. Even melanistic reds. It is quite a strong gene and can become quite a common occurence in some areas.

We have lots of them around here in North Hertfordshire. There is a huge population a few towns along in Letchworth/Baldock. You can't see the grey through the black!

I used to think they were introduced from abroad but when I looked into it, it seems they are just genetic adaptations/mutations of the common grey squirrel. Some people think they are protected - they are not! Just like the greys, they are slowly wiping out the red squirrel (this is protected).
