Best knife for a beginner

Hi all, new to the art of bushcraft and I do not yet have a suitable knife. Looking at the FÄLLKNIVEN F1. This seems to be a good alround start point without spending a fortune. Will be used for basic bushcraft but not really for carving.

Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated

Frosts Mora or clipper mate.

Personally I find the F1 a poor knife (many disagree)

Most everyone thinks the Mora hard to beat though!

Can't say fairer than that. I keep going back to the Frost Mora. Its a superb knife for the price and one of the best to start you off.;)

Really, looking at the price of the Frost knives I would have thought you dont get much for that price however it appears not the case here. If I were to go for a more sturdy offering, i.e. to allow some use for limbing etc, what else would you suggest, based on a budget of around £70 GBP

And thanks for the quick reply Red

There really is little to justify spending more than the cost of the frost knives other than specific designs, looks and bling.

Frost Clipper or Opinel. I actually prefer my opinel # 7 to my Clipper, though I am mainly using it for gutting/skinning not carving wood. It just seems to fit me well and feel natural in my hand. I recently bought a Brusletto Bamse, its a great knife, but I still go for the little Opinel.

Carbon sharpens easier. Stainless is more rust resistant if you want to canoe and use near salt water). Both are great. I prefer the clipper but its a close call!

i would go for the stainless mora first
i love my carbon one but i live by the sea
so it's rusts up if i don't keep on top of it
some think a dear knife makes you a good bushcrafter but it's
not the knife it's how you use it

Guys,

I have ordered a Frosts Clipper, carbon blade as I live inland and most of my work will be either dry or an a situation where I can keep the blade oiled.

This is my first post on these forums and I have to say I am deeply appreciative of the quick and usefull response I have received.

Your knowledge has enabled me to get a good quality tool without wasting money that could be better spent on other items of kit.

Many thanks

Rich

You've made a great choice there, good enough to do all you need, cheap enough to have a spare and not be too worried if you loose/trash one!

Thats the one Brian,

It truly is a superb knife (and trust me I have the best knife in the world to compare it against). There is no better "bang for your buck" to be had. I have owned many knives that cost much more and were far less capable. I stil use a Mora in all my "how to" threads to prove that no fance tools are needed

The banks of the Deveron.
It is funny, game prep, carving and leather work, the clipper always seems to be out....

I have some nice knives (I'm not even going to try to compete with Red) but Frosts are remarkable knives. Most of the knive I make for friends and family are based on Lapplander blades too.
