GRENDELS Mother makes a pass at BEOWULF; I have NEVER heard anything so SICK in my time as Anglo saxon scholar...

Any time Hollywood tries to get historical I just cringe.

I was involved in the production of armour for Gladiator a few years back and in the early stages of design we pointed out several things that could easily be made more accurate.

Ridley's answer was "We're making a film, not a history lesson."

While I don't actually have a problem about that, I do have a problem with the public's response to "historical" films in that they tend to think if they've seen it in a film it must be right.

Saw it last night, good film, bit gory for a 12a. You forgot,at times, that it's an animation.

A good film though and worth watching. Quite atmospheric. The queen develops a welsh acent near the end. A similar story line to '13th Warrior', with Banderas and set in a nordic theme.

Totally agree - we've seen enough of the Americans getting the Enigma Code and winning the Battle of Britain single handed. The Yanks are sublime at film making and our film industry isn't too bad either. I find it a real shame that they forgo historical accuracy for the sake of sensationalism and budget. Modern directors are missing a real trick in being modern chroniclers of actual history - to tell something lasting rather than short term box office takings.
But maybe I'm old fashioned!

Let's face it - Beowulf films are usually a little disappointing.
Beowulf (1999) is a kind of post apocalyptic version with Christopher Lambert as the hero
Beowulf and Grendel (2005) is ok but isn't exactly the most gripping film. Apart from one early fight sequence it is a little dull.
As much as I hate to say it, the best film version of the story is probably the 13th Warrior. Not exactly a close retelling (closer than Troy though!) but at least an enjoyable film.

Well,

We watched it in 3D at the Manchester Odeon :yikes: If you get chance to watch it in 3D then do, it really does add another dimension. The kids loved it but it is very intense in parts like when Grendel is smashing people up. The film is also pretty sexual throughout.

Beowulf comes across as a flawed hero.

Thanks for the link Fi :)

I agree Matt but I felt like a silly boy sitting there in those stupid glasses. Tried to watch it without them but it just made my eyes hurt. Thought it was a good film -13th Warrior is still my favourite though.
