There's a tool invented by a 13-year-old Kiwi girl called the Kindling Cracker. Same principle, but with an integral ring to keep hands/striking tools above the splitter:

I saw one of these the other day. I reckon the bane of the wood splitters life is knots, and knotty bits need beating down sometimes right to the blade. Could be a problem.

If that fine fellow Mr. Budd can get some poor child to be his pump monkey at the moot, surly he could knock up a few of those Swedish things and we can have a gang of 5 year olds knocking out kindling. Save having the little souls running around and having fun, getting fresh air and all that.
Question .... How many 5 year olds will we need over the 2 week period and how many before we turn a profit. Will we need 8 year olds to act as supervisors or do we just keep them for the Maul work?
