Axe sheath

Decided to do a bit of leatherwork today. I bought the axe off the bring and buy table at the moot a number of years ago and year before last Dave reprofiled it for carving. The sheath that came with it has never fitted - I think it was a spare they guy threw in just to stop it slicing people on the table. As you can see from the first couple of photos, it was always want to fall off given the slightest excuse.

The first step in making a sheath ideally involves cutting some cardboard. My first step was to draw the profile of the axe and then use this to mark out a sheath on cardboard. I tried this, but sadly something was off and I rushed it as it was getting late. As you can see, it's easier once you've got some reference points to flip your design rather than mark out on both sides. I cut it all a little short.

The 2nd attempt left a fair bit to be desired, so I decided to mark up the whole blade and flip that as a single item.

I rolled the axe on the cardboard and scored it where I needed to fold it. Finally I cut the single side template I'd made to mark up an insert.

My rivets weren't long enough for the 3mm leather I was using, so I stitched it. Once it's dried I will buff down the edges and leave it as raw vegtan to take on a natural look.
