Alright all,

Am I right in thinking that these are basically just files, nothing special about them?

The file version (not the diamond) is quite course. It does work well though and has a well shaped handle to stop you slicing your fingers.

It may be possible to get away with a small medium(ish) file for metal.

Any large fairly fine flat file will work. Better quality ones will keep on working wheras cheap ones are good for one side of an axe these days.

Sounds about right. I use a regular file to touch up the hatchet that I use for chopping kindling for the fireplace here.
