If I were up to the task of bladesmithing for elbow adzes, I'd pick the strips of steel from truck/lorry springs.
Most popular with Pacific Northwest native carvers. Plenty of work for me to craft the various handles for both
elbow and D adzes. You can see examples of these things at Kestrel Tool.
