Cramon Shamon! :)

Wayland's got those shoes.

I've not used those ice spikes, but there's no grip on the toe or heel section like, just like Grivel Instep crampons. I can't see them being as comfy as well as a lower profile microspikes set with full foot coverage, like my Kahtoola Microspikes.

They are the same weight though and definitely more robust in extreme cold.

Thanks for your knowledge Teepee :),

I had to give these a go so I went for the six point jobs , very well made seem to be unused dated 1989 with a crowsfoot embossed in the leather .

looking forward to giving them a go now ,, ;)

Well, they are dirt cheap, but they are horrible as far as crampons go. Even in the 50s crampon technology was more advanced. If Herzog or Hillary had used crampons like these, they would have died before reaching base camp. It would be impossible to use German technique with these crampons. A modern 12 point crampon is light years ahead in technology. If you don't want to go with a full crampon, something like the Kahtoola Microspikes or the Hillsound Train Crampon Pro will outperform these things any day of the week and twice on Sunday. There is just no excuse for something like this passing off as a crampon in 1989.

Unless intending to use these for slippy pavements or fairly flat ground , on ice. I would however strongly advise any potential winter walkers not to touch them with a barge-pole, While Ex War Dept gear may be OK as far as inexpensive clothing for the outdoors, I would not trust these, I had a friend who used ex-army karabiners when practicing, and when he was at the top of a rope the karabiner started to straighten out above him. He was very lucky in that he was in a position to
Transfer his weight off of that rope in time to save himself, hecarried the half straightened karabiner around for ages to let folk see it. He was not a particularly heavy bloke , probably about 13 stone. Please be warned.

Thanks for your inputs. :)

We knew the area we were to be travelling in. We cramponed and snowshoe'd without incident and for a cheap price.

Now we know that this type of trip and weather suits us we will probably be buying better equipment, and trying harsher conditions.

I would never use 2nd hand climbing equipment. Period.

I was in a Tshirt as i was pulling the pulk it was to avoid over heating and reduce sweating as not to get cold when we stopped witch worked well. Using second had karabiners for climbing whether its military or not is not a smart, you asking to get killed you don't know what they been used for before or what stress has been put on them.
