Battoning to split a stubbon bit of kindling - yes :) qiuck ,easy and not too much abuse
Battoning through 8" logs - no:) - that is for axe or wedges

IMHO :D

And therein lies the conundrum - some people appear to be unable to make that distinction.

Perhaps its a bloke thing - I've heard it darkly rumoured (mostly by ladies) that some men are unable to accurately measure 8 inches :D
 
clearly my abbreviation of the saying "hitting the nail on the head" has been incorrectly interpreted as an insult.

I merely meant that Xunil's first post has got it spot on.

Too true. Axe for splitting, knife for finer stuff. Best idea is as Xunil said above. Forget the strength issue and use smaller, lighter knife and decent small hatchet... Weight is not that much different done right.
