Antler can be very difficult to carve as it's very fibrous and almost honeycombed sort of inside. You only really have a relatively thin outer "shell" to carve. Some people prefer sheep horn or even better buffalo horn to carve which is usually boiled and compressed and left to cool before carving. I often used a mixture of antler and buffalo horn on my walking sticks.
