Another evilbay gone mad!

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I am with Goose and fiacha on this purely because, it is not neccesarily someone who is intellectualy challenged, it may be someone who is just underinformed on the subject, whether the description on the page had the "STYLE" dropped on purpose or whether it was by accident it makes little difference.

The thing that most people are not going to know is that Ray doesn't market a sheath for a frosts on his site, the only sheaths that are currently on his site are for Woodlore type knives and they do not resemble what has been placed on e-bay.

The version of the frost is 760 I think and Ray doesn't market these on his site either now as he has the clipper on there.

People are right that the people bidding on this item make thier own choices, but I think that the way it is being marketed is a deliberate act to make money from a well known name.

If a company tried marketing a product in that manner, they'd get sued, whether the word "style" is in there or not. Just try marketing "Heinz-style Baked Beans" or "Coca-Cola-style cola drink" and see how far you get...

If you go through his history from the sellers you find this and this .

Personally I think whoever the seller of this is are members on here and Britishblades just look at the history from sellers.

And it looks like a left handed sheath

My god , not only is it being advertised as a "Ray mears sheath" which it is not but some poor bu**er has actually bid £90 for it. Looking in the feedback there has also been a few cases of the product not arriving.

The bottom line is that all people should be aware and have a look around before they buy. It's a well known fact that ebay often has items on it that start at a higher price than can be found by looking about.

I do feel sorry for the person that's bid on this, it's a shame in many forms. But, this sale is between those two people. We have opinions but it's nothing much to do with us. Although making contact is the prerogative of all and hopefully that will do some good.

Holy Cow...thats a whole £25 worth of kit for a mere £90.

So there are some bushcraft millionairs :D :D :D

Fair enough.

Ebay is a different world though. It seems that a whole different set of rules apply there than to in real life. By example, I've just searched for "ray mears".

The Essential Bushcraft book is currently £10.01 with £2 postage and two days to go.

This costs £8.57 from Amazon. Postage is free if you were to buy something else and take the total over £15. If you didn't want to do that it would be £2.75.

My point is, even if you were to pay Amazon's postage, it would be cheaper than the current eBay price. I presume the price will go up in the next two days.

This isn't looking for the book with some obscure google terms and finding a two-bit website that you'd be doubtful about putting your credit card details in. This is going straight to the most popular (IMO, no proof) online bookshop and looking for it. There's no hassle with buying from a stranger, worrying if they'll just take your money and not send your item, you're dealing with a big company.

I will never understand some people who use ebay.

Right, I'm off to Amazon to buy a job lot and stick them all on eBay. Roll up, roll up. :lmao:

Not really.

You can hardly blame the seller, maybe the guy thought he'd make a leather sheath etc and stick it up on ebay to cover some excess xmas bills.

Not his fault if people go mad bidding for it, I would be shocked if any ebayer ended an auction because the price had gone too high :)

.....I'm off to buy some cheap knives and leather.... ;p

Yup looks like it!

I'm glad to be honest! because i was thinking about Marts comment that he had contacted the bidders! - imagine how you would have felt knowing you were about to be fleeced and knowing you were the higest bidder and 'locked' into the contract!

I have to admit I do buy from ebay - hence noticing it in the first place - but I look hard / read it harder (and twice) and NEVER spend more than i'd be prepared to loose! I think that is the key to picking up bargins;)

Tried looking, but that ebay item appears to have been pulled!

There definitely are buzz words. When I was looking for an industrial sewing machine to do packs and leather - I noticed many adverts describing sewing machines I knew were domestic machines as "industrial." Ought to be a boxing glove attachment on the computer screen - just like the one I'm going to install on my phone for telemarketers.

Ill second that, I spent ages sifting through crap sewing machine adverts until I fould the right thing :(

Although the buyer might be lacking knowledge about something they are bidding on its not hard to Google it and find the price is it?
Even if I were buying something for my girfriend I am pretty sure that I could hit Google and gain some knowledge on the subject.

Perhaps if people were not quite as obsessed by the Raymond Mears tag things like this would not happen as much, I mean Raymond no disrespect whatsoever as he is very good at what he does but the sun most definatly does not shine out of his backside.

The knife although not "worth" the money will still be perfectly servicable and strangly enough some people actually manage quite well without a 200 pound knife (mind if they pay a hundred for a tenner knife they might be inclined to check up on things properly in future).

On this one I am sorry to say Buyer Beware as the seller didn't put those bids in did he?

I've almost entirely given up on E-Bay in the past year as I find very little on there that can't be had direct from a shop or manufacturer for the same money or less.
Only thing I find it handy for is rarities, stuff that isn't available elsewhere.
