This is about half of the walnuts we collected from our one small tree in France:

Brought a load back with us too so some good eating ahead... coffee cake, methinks!

Yep, there's been a bumper crop of walnuts this year, due to the warm spring & lack of night frosts at flowering time,..we've got them coming out of our ears :).....there is a seasonal inconvenience though ; the beech/stone marten(s) take them under the house roof & insist on rolling them against the plasterboard in the wee small hours.:(

Had a few this year too and noticed another tree locally where I got some more. What's the best way to de-husk them, or I have got them too green as the husks are very difficult to get off ?

Cheers, Paul

Most of ours were lying on the ground out of the husks. There were a few on the tree but the husks were really split & dry so the nuts came out very easily - sounds like yours aren't ripe yet

If the nuts were OK,i.e. edible, then prehaps you could make a cut along green husks with a knife & leave them some where warm & dry for a week or so & hopefully they will dry out & start to split, making the extraction of the nut easier. Did you find them on the ground or pick them from the tree ? It's always best to wait until they fall...In France people beat the trees with long sticks to bring the walnuts down but they are ready to fall anyway.

Picked most from the tree, so probably too early, but otherwise the squirrels have them all :)

Will try cutting them as suggested and see if they dry out successfully. Thanks for the advice.
