Ok, in honour of a signature I saw on here, this is a piece of metal not a knife. It's not designed for use but it was very cheap and I thought it would be a good thing to try out before I did a proper knife. Besides, it was pretty

This is the rough-shaped handle made of buffalo horn and the sgian dubh blade.

After a lot of sanding and polishing and not a few errors, this is the result - not glued up yet but a good fit

Lovely job - in fact nicer than the turn shoes! What did you use to shape the horn?

I cut the basic shape with a jigsaw then went to work with my trusty dremel clone to sand out the major curves. I scraped off most of the sanding marks with my knife then went to the wet&dry, 180 down to 600 followed by the dremel clone and a polishing mop and some red compound that came with the dremel.

Not exactly old-tech but I do love my little dremel clone

I drilled in a 3.5 mm hole for the tang and widened it slightly. To add a little strength, given the tiny tang, I cut into the handle a litle so I could lock the blade in when it's assembled.

Think I'm ready for a real knife?

Deinitely - that one looks good enough to pop into a sheath for someone who wears the kilt!

Thanks for the info - you've done a lovely job on that horn (antler yes but I suspect the structure is sort of "honeycombed" in the middle - I've never worked with it so its interesting to see how a nice single piece hilt can be formed - good job

Nice work Grim. Thats a lovely looking fit and a fine looking piece of buff horn by the look of it. I suspect that AttAcc have been doing quite well out of you lately?

I can't think of where you might have got the notion that it's not a knife (yet).... Go on, put an edge on it.. I dare ya!

Longstrider, it doesn't even have a bevel! This lot came from Richard Head rather than AttAcc. I do like AttAcc but R Head have quite a good selection of horn. The buff was in pieces sized nicely for knife scales but given the diminutive size of the blade I only had to use one and had some spare to do a little pimping

Yes, he really is called Richard Head! He has a brother called Phillip too.

Their longbows are divine too. Problem is I just can't justify getting one, especially as I have a movement disorder and wouldn't want to tic at the wrong time - like with the bow at full draw...
