From the carboot sale, it just says Swift Sheffield (it hasn't travelled far as i'm in Sheffield:o )

It's very comfy to hold and small compared with any of my other two hatchets...
shown here with two fishing reels that i bought...

Size comparison shows it's a fair bit shorter than my US plumbs hatchet..

I think i'm starting to get the collecting bug for hatchets now:naughty:

John:)

how much? i would assume its a good steel, old tools tend to be, so a sharpen and a polish and it will look great and be a very good tool. the handle looks a bit thin to me and you best check its not rotten or has woodworm because axe heads flying around uncontrollably rarely ends well :D

Cor!, nice Plumb hatchet...fancy a trade??

Sorry but i love the plumbs (love the little swift too:cool:)

Scorpio- I paid the princely sum of £1.25 for the swift, the shaft looks very thin due to the angle i've taken the pic at (i'm rubbish with a camera:o )

John:)

It's sure had a hard life!!!, in operation it's perfect, it's a mitchell match (440a) with finger dab control for the bail arm..
I already have two of these and they're fantastic reels but a little heavy for trotting a float downriver all day:o

I may dismantle it, wire wool it and repaint it...

Regards, John:)

Lovely, Swift are a fine old maker.

Provided the head is still firmly attached & there is no rot or worm this will last you for years & years.

Many modern handles are too thick, thin handles can be a good thing - just enough flex to take out the impact a little, more apparent benefits on bigger axes used for long periods but still relevant.
