Agreed Trev, and what a wonderful job they do in prompting people to consider the possibilities that may lie right on their doorsteps!
That piece of woodland you like to visit, or your favourite camping place could easily have been the favourite of others in times past.

I don't think anyone missed a trick . I think they hit the target audience spot on . You have to remember that in the 70's and early 80's they made some very specific programs ( to clarify , there was no choice but TV and the audiences were HUGE ) and they were never repeated . Most people nowadays turn on the TV in order to turn off and get there substance from books and internet .

That's an interesting take on it, Trev. But I can't agree totally. Yes there are books and the internet but it seems more and more TV producers are shying away from telling us anything of interest in the quest for celebrity presented pretty pictures. Maybe it's the financial move towards making TV shows in conjunction with a commercial American channel who have always preferred style over substance that has resulted in the current dumbing down.

The challenge should be to present the facts in a way that still educates and respects the viewer's intelligence while incorporating modern film making techniques. The BBC seems to have forgotten that its remit is to educate and entertain.

I think Ray Mears offers a decent balance of fact and pretty pics. I do wonder if his time came again, because he isn't airbrushed and that handsome, he'd get a chance to make TV programmes (I'm thinking the recent slaying of Countryfile's older presenters to be replaced by younger, more attractive ones.)
