My DD Hammocks poncho is a bit leaky at the neck after a quite a few years of service. I was a fan, though I would have liked it a little wider to make it a better lean-to shelter and simpler around the neck.
What other options are out there at the moment?
I want something tough, big enough to...
Hi, I'd like to know what cordage you all find works best for bow drill friction fires.
I've used paracord which is tough but I find it slips a bit, especially when it's been used a few times.
I tried builders cord (brick line) which seemed to grip pretty well but broke after extended use.
I'm...
Hi, I was wondering if anyone could suggest a simple and effective way to catch fish whilst canoeing... I'm not planning on stopping to fish, I'm just thinking of simply tying a line onto the back of the canoe as I paddle. I know nothing about fishing apart from the fact that they're tasty and...
I'm after a simple but delicious bannock recipe.
It's going to make a couple of breakfasts (with sultanas and honey available to augment the mixture) and then another batch (with some herbs etc) to compliment a nice venison stew.
I'm planning to cook it wrapped around a stick.
I've cooked...
I'm keen to try smoking meat (venison) in the wild to preserve it.
I came across this article http://livetoseetomorrow.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/how-to-smoke-dry-meat-in-bush.html which sounds fairly straight forward (forgive the end of the world theme to the site), but I'd be keen to hear from...
Hi everyone,
I'm having a log burner installed in a couple of weeks and I need to order some logs.
I was wondering what logs to go for in terms of the best value for money, and I'm also keen to hear what a good price would be for logs...
Here's where I'm up to:
I fleshed the hide, then salted it 4 or 5 times.
It's now stiff and feels completely dry.
Now what do I do?
There seems to be so much (too much?) advice on the web, so I thought I'd put it to the community to see what you all do...
Eventually I want to have it draped...
I went away with a deer hide on Sunday at the end of an excellent day with Wildway Bushcraft.
I fleshed it that night (I think that's the right word), getting all the flesh off.
Then I poured salt all over it and rubbed it in.
Then I hung it.
The next day, I brushed all the salt off and put more...
Has anyone got an old pair of black issued combat boots going spare?
I'm being charged £51.50 for only handing in 1 pair.
They will only be going straight in the bin when they get them, but it looks like someone wants to take one last dump on me while they can.
I'm even being charged £1.35...
My wife got me some leather craft things last Christmas, but I never got round to getting started! :(
Now I'm on my Christmas holidays I'd like to get started by making a sheath for my MOD Survival Knife...
So far I have the Tandy Leather deluxe handstitching set which gave me
10 Harness...
I just stumbled across this video on survival navigation!

Have I missed something, or is he totally totally wrong about the tip of the shadow moving from South to North?
It always moves from West to East right?
I can understand someone...
I'm applying for a shotgun certificate at the moment.
I have permission on a couple of nearby farms to shoot rabbits.
I was wondering what else you are allowed to shoot with shotguns, when/where you're allowed to shoot it etc.
I'm keen to get as much advice from people as I can, as I'm...
I've never really used my knife to strike sparks from a firesteel, but recently tried it with a new knife.
It worked perfectly, but now, running my finger along the spine, I can feel little dents I think.
It's a Condor Bushcraft Basic 4 (1075 steel I think)
Collected a few hazelnuts today :)
They were scattered on the ground all over the place amidst loads that had already been tucked into by squirrels (I guess.)
First time I've ever collected any. They look like these...
I'm thinking of getting the Condor Sapien... I'd love to know what people think of it if anyone has one!
I think I'm basically after a full tang Mora Classic 2.
If anyone knows of any other good full tang alternatives (under £50) let me know :)
It would have to be smaller than a Woodlore...
I'm thinking of buying a Trangia stove. Normally I'd be cooking over fires, but I thought it would be worthwhile to have a small stove in my kit for when I'm in areas where fires aren't allowed or areas with limited/no firewood.
I've never seen one, and I don't really know anything about them...
Wasn't sure whether to post this in firecraft, reviews or out and about, but I'm so pleased about making friction fire, here it is!
I had an awesome weekend away recently with Wildway Bushcraft! www.wildwaybushcraft.co.uk/ www.facebook.com/WildwayBushcraft
John and the team were...
I had an idea a while ago and I wanted to know if people would be up for it...
Any time Im out in the great outdoors I almost always have a hip flask of my favourite tipple with me.
Now that favourite tipple has, for some years now, been Drambuie. The sweetened whiskey warms my body and my...
A few months ago I bought a Zebra billy can, but I never had a chance to Christen it.
I had a few hours after work today, so I decided to head out into the forest and cook up some dinner over a camp fire :)
I found a beautiful spot. I've never seen anyone out here in 2 years of long hikes with...
