    Recycling old washing machines...

I bought a 2nd hand Hotpoint washing machine a few month back, had it for a month and the electronics went on the blink, phoned Hotpoint and for them to send a boy out with a laptop to reset it would cost more than I paid for it. Been sitting In the back garden for a month or two, so time to...

    The thread of bushcrafting information

Given the grandiose name of this thread I hope people are as interested in what I am. I'm a fan of what most would call "useless information" and for all intents and purposes it doesn't matter much at all most folk will know what your on about but given the nature of our shared hobby im sure...

    Knots for tightening Tarp Ridgerope

Surely all the knots you need to know are Siberian and tautline hitch? Possibly add clove hitch for tying to pegs but you could use a Siberian hitch for that. I've never used a full ridgeline though instead I tie the corners and middle to get it as tight as drum. If you can't be bothered...

    Expensive Knives.

I've had them same on for 12 years, been used daily, never chipped the blade. Then again in aware of the fact its a knife and not an axe and I use it as such hence why its lasted so long

    Expensive Knives.

The folk who buy expensive knives do it simply because they like sharp stuff I think and why not. Personally I use a 5 pound Mora, If properly taken care of my 5 pound knife will do exactly the same job as a well maintained 500 pound knife and will probably outlast me but in not a knife fan, I...

Avoiding the use of twined cordage

Interesting. Grass rope in my experience degenerates pretty rapidly unprotected but even otzi had grass cordage kept intact. I dont think its difficult to make good rope, its really very simple just incredibly time consuming, surely anywhere possible something else would be used to save...

Avoiding the use of twined cordage

After spending pretty extreme amounts of time harvesting, processing and twining serious amounts of cordage in wondering about methods of avoiding the need for twined cordage which is probably a better thing to know about than proper cordage technique. Obviously the simplest solution is to...

How do you make fine string?

I've made literally thousands of metres of various cordage thickness from nettle fibre this year but I can't make very fine stuff. Even when you break down the cordage, the minimum your going to get to is 1 fibre each side which is a weak as hell arrangement as any slight weakness anywhere in...

    Sharpening stainless steel blades

All I've ever used is a DC3 on all my knives and they are all butchering sharp just takes longer.

    Bone, skin and brain supplies

I'm interested in learning to make buckskin and making bone tools but I don't know anyone with even a remote connection to hunting or butchering. Are there any suppliers of fresh, salted or frozen skins I can buy them from or is it a case of "knowing a guy"? I was thinking about contacting...

    Handlining primitivishlyish

Have to wait for the tide to come in. Has anyone caught flounder with earthworms? Its all lugworm on the mudflats but my oldboys borrowed my wellies and I don't really fancy walking a quarter mile through kneedeep mud barefoot to get some bait.

    Handlining primitivishlyish

Cool, that's probably where I sub obviously stole the idea from. Just finished 40 ft braided nettle line, made a 3 strand twined nettle leader, tied a stone on with a constrictor knot and attached the hook. Going to go and give it a go for a few hours.

    Handlining primitivishlyish

I've been working on a braided nettle fish line and I've got a bunch of primitive hooks. I've fished for flounder in the mouth of the yay but I wanting to try it of a primitive handpine with hawthorn hooks, is this legal to do? All the anglers at this end oglf the tay(at the mouth) don't...

    Harvesting dead seals

I spoke with a guy not long ago he said its normal just more noticeable as they end up on the beach

    Harvesting dead seals

I'm working down in Dundee most of the time so see them at tentsmuir. Noone seems to do anything with them, they just rot on the beach, given that they're already dead I may just go ahead

    Harvesting dead seals

Is it legal to harvest bits of seals I find washed up upon the beach? I'm finding at least 1 a week that's still pretty fresh so I wouldn't mind getting the bones and fat and possibly the skin. They're already dead so hopefully it ain't a problem

    He's doing that wrong...

Went to an outdoor fair a few months ago and someone was doing a cordage and netting demonstration and making a hash of it so I asked if he wanted a hand, turns out he'd only made a few nets and a few hundred foot of cordage so was understandable why he wasn't much use

    Water retting nettle fibre

usually when you harvest them you immediatly strip of the leaves which also removes the sting. The nettles I have retting still had stings attached but are no longer stingy after a night in water

    Water retting nettle fibre

The pectin must be leaching out already as I can now remove the fibres even easier than fresh green nettles.
