Is anyone using one of these as an edc?

That's a nice looking folder! I can't comment on whether it's worth the listed price but one of the folders I've described here might be an alternative: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72207&highlight= If you need help with the German homepage just let me know :D. Cheers Jörg

New pocket knife in Ray Mears shop

Hi there, I also own a Mercator and it still is my favourite pocket knive  (maybe together with the SAK alox soldier). Here's a quick review from me: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=72207&highlight= Please note that there's also a carbon steel version available...

    Lidl Diamond Sharpener

I have bought a few in the past (LIDL Germany) and they are excellent value for money. I use one on my crooked hoove knife (for my horses) and I have two as diamond rods in my low-budget sharpmaker-clone in the kitchen (followed by ceramic rods). I'm using them for 1-2 years now and they are...

Why am I so rubbish at sharpening a knife?

Quoted for emphasis: this is it :)! In my experience, at least 90% of the time someone has a problem with getting a nice sharp is that the bevels don't meet. There is no shortcut to a sharp knife, you have to sharpen "all the way through" until a burr is formed. I wouldn't worry too much about...

taking scratches out of the blade

Hi Xander, In order to create a patina with coffee you just brew a really strong cup (instant coffee works best) and apply that. Make sure you have removed all oil/fat from the part you want to stain e.g. with acetone). Good luck:D Jörg

taking scratches out of the blade

Hi Xan, Are you going to use this knife or is it destined for the drawer/cabinet? Because if you are going to use it these won't be the last scratches ;):D. I know how you feel and also hated the first scratches in my shiny new Grohmann's Boat Knife. But now I'm over it and use it and have...

Helle Temagami - a joy to use...

I hear what you're saying and agree fully agree. But talking about the Temagami and the Eggen - looking at pictures and dimensions they do look quite similar, especially the blade shape. Do you also have a Helle Eggen and if yes maybe could post a comparison picture to the Temagami? And do you...

    Camp Knife

I'd recommend a Leuku. I use mine for making kindling for the wood stove even though I'm normally firm in the "use an axe for chopping camp" ;). It also packs nicely in a backpack. I've made made my own from a 8" Lauri blade: dirt cheap, fantastic steel and fun to make...

Best type of sharpener for a newbie??

Hi Grendel, There are already several great threads on sharpening here on this forum :D. Here's one of them: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=65138&highlight= As with almost all things in life there is no universally right answer: it always depends . In this case...

Two classic German folders on a budget

Thanks for posting the pic - that really looks like a copy :(: The "cat stamping" is wrong as are the rivets. And the blade should be stamped with "Mercator" too. Oh well, I don't need any more knives either - but this doesn't seem to keep me from buying more and more sharp & shiny stuff...

Two classic German folders on a budget

Maybe its a beat-up Mercator with a stainless steel blade? There is a stainless steel version still available but I wouldn't recommend it as IMO the C75 carbon steel is much better. Could you post a pic? Yep :D. Why don't you try and contact them directly? You can find the contact details...

Two classic German folders on a budget

That's brilliant - nice colleague you're having there:cool:! My Mercator has been getting a lot of use over the Easter break, both for light work like picknicking and barbecueing and harder work on the farm like setting up & repairing fences. It really is a simple and effective tool. One...

Two classic German folders on a budget

Hi folks, I thought that maybe a review of two classic (old-fashioned ) German folding knives, made and bought in Germany's "blade city" Solingen, would be of interest to you :D The top knife is a Mercator knife from the company OTTER-Messer GmbH in Solingen...

    Buck Folding Hunter

Hi there, I have a Buck 110 Folding Hunter - my brother in law brought it back for me from the USA - for 29 USD (K-Mart) :D. It's a real classic and the mother of all backlock folders . The backlock closes like a safe door and the 420HC steel takes a good edge and holds it for quite...

Making a sheath from denim and resin

Hi folks, In my recent thread I had asked for advice on how to make a sheath for my daughter's knife (http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=68707) Toddy came up with the brilliant idea of doing it like this: "...canvas, or denim, and soaked it in resin around the knife covered...

    leuku in antler and birch

Thanks for the reply Josh :)! I understand that the leather helps protecting the antler but I'm not quite sure how it could effecively absorb shock:confused:? Anyhow, thanks for sharing your work. Cheers Jörg

    leuku in antler and birch

Hi Josh, I really like the look of the antler and birch :)! However, I've noticed that you fitted your last knives with a leather bolster. To me, a bolster has the function of protecting and stabilising/fixing the handle. It's also easier to keep the knife clean/hygienic when used for...

    Knife sharpening

In my view you only need waterstones if you want to sharpen straight razors or need hairsplitting sharp woodworking tools. In most other cases you can use wet&dry, either on a soft surface (for convex grinds) or on a hard surface (for scandi, flat and hollow ground). The sharpmaker indeed is...
