    Can anyone ID my rucksack?

The black plastic fastenings on the side pockets and the shoulder straps look different to the normal GS bergans I have seen. It's possible that it's a rare early issue GS bergan - I'm pretty sure someone would pay at least £50 for it on ebay, so for 40p you got a bargain.

    Military kit ID help

The first one is a West German army shelter half - you button two together to make a two man tent (without groundsheet). Each man would have a shelter half in a pouch made from the same material, and another small pouch containing aluminium pole sections and pegs. The shelter half can also turn...

    German Army kip mat?

Be carefull when dealing with the surplus company advertising the matts in the link. I've found them to be obnoxious when I made a simple stock enquiry over the phone. I now view them in the same manor as 'Surplus & Misadventure'. I think the German matts are very good though - I bought a...

    flameless heaters

The Canadian army had larger versions of the US heaters which fit UK ration pouches. I bought some a few years ago during a sale in a camping store in Swansea - theres a bit more info and some pictures in my thread here...

    45L German Army Mountain Rucksack

I used one of the earlier versions with the metal buckles and leather straps daily for about eight years as a school bag (a long time ago). I loved the thing and it could have easily had another eight years life in it, but as others have said, it's ideally suited to light loads. They come in...

calling army rucksack experts (pic heavy)

The pack was made in Juriens, Switzerland. The shoulder straps were taken from West German Y straps (the ring, one pice of cotton webbing and a clip have been removed).

calling army rucksack experts (pic heavy)

Ok, from the stamp, the pack is Swiss and the shoulder straps are German.

calling army rucksack experts (pic heavy)

The cotton shoulder straps are definitely German (West German) webbing Y straps. They were used from the 1960s until the early 1990s. They are also used as shoulder straps with a basic cotton rucksack. I haven't seen your rucksack part before though.

Which army doss bag is this ?

It's definitely a German army synthetic sleeping bag. It replaced the one with the arms around the early 1990s. It would be suitable for summer use in the UK, but it's not made to the same high quality of most German army gear. The current synthetic and 58 pattern British army bags would be a...

    Bergen questions

Hi, this is the first olive green PLCE longback bergan. '8465-99-130-9349' is the Nato stock number for the bergan. 'Rucksack long' is a longback bergan (some have shorter backs). 'SL32A' is the manufacturing order/contract number 'CWL' is the maker, made in 1989. Britsh army (olive &...

Mobile phones (not very bushcrafty I know)

Nokia have recently announced their next rugged phone, the 3720: http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/09/nokia-makes-3720-official-its-most-rugged-mobile-handset-to-da/ I've got the Sonim XP1, but I'm keen to see if the new Nokia is as rugged.

    Survival Aids Jacket?

If it's their 'Survival Aids Arctic Parka' labelled with a ventile tag, it would be worth £70 to £100 if it's in good condition. I know they made two versions in light blue and green. I hand washed one once and it took about a week to dry.

    Rate this ruck pls?

Hi, I can't advise personnally on a suitable pack for someone 6'3'', but I do know the genuine German army version of the 65L rucksack is terrible and should be avoided at all costs: http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21693&highlight=german+rucksack The one in your link is a...

Source for YKK #10v Zips (PLCE zips)

Hi, just an update - the 8mm heavyweight 35cm long open ended YKK zips arrived today from Pointnorth. The black ones I ordered look like 'updated' versions of the military PLCE compatable ones. They have a plastic (good quality) zip pull/slider instead of a metal zip pull/slider and are about...

Source for YKK #10v Zips (PLCE zips)

Just to update everyone, Pennine Outdoor don't stock YKK zips, but Profabrics (Pointnorth) say that their 'heavy weight 8mm' zips are YKK Vislon #10 zips. I've put in an order so fingers crossed that they are the correct ones - I'll keep everyone up to date when they arrive. However in the...

Source for YKK #10v Zips (PLCE zips)

Hi Jared, I've also sent enquiries to profabrics & Pennineoutdoor this afternoon, so hopefully they'll get back to me tomorrow. I've seen the olive ones on ebay now and then, but the black ones never seem to come up. Cheers

Source for YKK #10v Zips (PLCE zips)

Hi, thanks for the links Shewie. I don't know whether they deal with the public directly, but I've sent an email to the sales people at the first website so hopefully they will point me in the right direction. I'm attempting to make a daysack for my photo gear and these were one of the last bits...

Source for YKK #10v Zips (PLCE zips)

Hi, does anybody know where I can obtain 14'' long YKK Vislon #10v zips in black? These are the heavy duty zips which are used to attach the side pockets to the Brtish army PLCE bergans. I've done a google search and most places seem to have the size #8 but not the #10. Many thanks

    German Army packs

Hi, you need to search in the forum for a thread entitled 'german army bergen' - I can't figure out how to post the link, but it basically says it's a very bad rucksack (infact the worst I've ever owned). The smaller canvas German rucksacks on the other hand are fantastic. I'll bump the...
