    Compound knife handles? views

Tim, the middle part of the knife is reindeer antler. I would be about a 3 - 3.5 hour drive from you as I live near Rjukan. I agree that stacked handles can be easier Jontok, but the example I posted with the reindeer antler was quite difficult. I had to work with the natural curve of the...

    Compound knife handles? views

Stick tang and composite handled knives is all that is generally made at our knife club. Norway's traditional knife designs all have stick tangs and I have never seen one broken under normal use. I made this for a competiton and it has become my woods knife. No trouble with it yet and it has...

    ANZAC biscuits

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WG48Ftsr3OI Heart wrenching stuff. I grew up with a few old diggers and the stories of Gollipoli were just bloody terrible. How those poor old buggers survived is nothing short of a miracle. When they landed some had rifles and no bullets, others had bullets and...

The leather seems to be veg tanned leather. I am not sure as it's my first knife and I used the leather all the old gents use at the club. I don't know how to avoid the orange peel effect so if you would be so kind I will gladly take it in!! Paul.

I'll see what I can do. The guys won't meet at the club until next week and I'll ask them then. There are some lovely looking knives and some of them are serious silver workers so their carving is brilliant. My wife too is from Oslo but I don't think she will be going back anytime soon. The...

I have actually. There are a few really good knifemakers at the knife club. Also, I know 2 people with knife collections with some knives around 200 years old. I'll try get some photos when I can. As for Kristiansand... I love that city. I can't stand Oslo but I could happily live in...

    Knife competition scandi (pics)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was a first knife but i have had experience working with metal, and natural materials so that came in handy for this project. I did go a little overboard making it look purdy' but i want it to be special for my son. My next knives have been simplified but I...

Thanks Dave. I would like to add that I DID NOT forge the blade. On future knives I may but that is a blade I purchased at the smitty (which is 30 yards from my house). Paul.

They were, but I liked mine best... of course!!!! It will actually be a gift to my son when he turns 18 (he is 14 months now). I have started wearing it and it has become my edc bush knife so that it will have been "lived in" by me when he gets it. I have a few more on the go as I think I've...

    Knife competition scandi (pics)

We had a friendly competition at bushcraft USA. We were given a couple months to build a knife and enter it anonymously and members could vote. I had never made a knife before nor a sheath for a normal knife, but, having experience in sculpting, jewellery and carpentry helped I guess. Anyway...

    Kuksa questions

What type of wood are they made from? I have wooden cutting boards and butcher's blocks and never let them soak in water by submersing them. I will give them a wipe over with a hot cloth and very mild detergent but that is about it. As for untreated / un oiled wood, I just give it a quick rinse...

    Kuksa questions

The taste for one. The second thing is that it breaks down the oils found naturally in the wood that protect it. Paul.

    Kuksa questions

Drinking coffee from your kuksa will also help seal the wood to an extent. The fine coffee particles and oils from fresh coffee (not instant) will absorb into the wood and over time seal it up. Paul.

Are you better than your knife?

True, but any decent artisan who takes pride in their work will usually have the best tools they can afford. As a carpenter I use good saws, chisels and hammers. Sure I can use cheap rubbish and get the job done but there is little joy to be had in fighting against an inferior tool while trying...

Are you better than your knife?

Although i get the point you are making, I think people need to understand the extent of their skills and shop wisely. I mean for most people a Mora is more than enough considering they may not spend much time in the woods/hunting/camping/carving. If you use the tool a great deal, you soo become...

Hobo Stove Gallery (Probably picture heavy)

Call me lazy, I made a gassifier from a food jar thermos. Works a treat and was free except for the ikea drainer. It's easy to make, durable and cheap. Add to that the fact that it's VERY fuel efficient and does not smoke and you have a winner. Paul.

Are you better than your knife?

Oooright, sit on my hip while I pee in the woods. Lets see who does that better, you or a knife? ;) Paul.

Real Heros of Telemark - Aviemore

Dang, I thought you were talking about where they were in Norway. I actually live there. I have been on the same trail and looked at the huts where they stayed. I am a 15 minute drive from the heavy water plant. Paul.
