Just to prove you can't be objective about these things...

Look at a typical example of the front page... At first glance, it seems we're all hard drinking weapon-obsessed arsonists! This thread was intended as light-hearted, but got me thinking about the perception of bushcraft to the 'average Joe', as it were: I think we can all recall...

    Testing your winter skills...

... anyone else been doing this? I find this time of the year to be the best time to go out and do a proper back-woods camp: everything's much more epic! I'll be camping out tomorrow night, where BBC weather tells me I can expect a good minus 2 celcius, which should be, errr, cool! :p I...

    Oxtail

I just picked up a load of oxtail in the bargain bin at Tesco for 30p and don't really know what to do with it. It's not really bushcrafty, but I figured that here's as good a place as any to ask for suggestions :) My big idea is: cook it all up into a stew with some swede, carrot, potato...

    I'm feelin' spiffy.

I'm not long back from a two week jaunt on the (bonnie, bonnie) banks of Loch Lomond (sort of bushcrafty, like; we slept under bashas and built a coracle out of junk we found. It was kinda like what'd happen if the wombles overdosed on Ray Mears), only to find that while I was gone my Grandad...

    Discovered: great emergency tinder.

Brasso wadding! It's basically just easily teased cotton wool absolutely packed with metal polish. It catches a spark easier than anything I've ever seen, the polish makes it waterproof, and at a fiver for a fair sized tin it's bretty darned good on the value side (say compared with the usual...

    Simple ration?

What would you think is needed for a simple and versatile daily ration for an extended camp-out? Obviously it'll include things like a fair quantity of flour, some suet, salt, sugar etc. and I'd like to take some other things like dried onions, but I'm a bit lost as to what quantities are needed...

    Collapsible water containers

Does anyone know if and where I can get hold of some kind of large jerry can type of thing that will collapse for easy transportation? It's not the kind of thing I've seen around very often, but if anyone has any information then I'd be really grateful to hear it!

    Nice thick blankets?

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a good old-fashioned thick woolen blanket? It's getting to the time of year where I don't want to use a sleeping bag, so I'd like to get myself a decent blanket that'll be good for summer, yet still keep me warm on a chilly night. Any suggestions?

    Bushcrafty films!

I wasn't quite sure where to put this, but, inspired by the BBC's recent showing of Cast Away, I thought it might be interesting for to compare notes with fellow forum goers on any bushcrafty movies we may have seen. Any recommendations for films or discussions on/criticism of the techniques...

    A bushcrafty adventure. (sort of)

Well, on Easter Sunday it's almost a tradition that we all go over to my Nan's house where she cooks a big dinner and then sets out a load of snacky type things on the table for the evening... but, ever the adventurer, I wasn't about to leave it there. I know more than most that you can never...

    My Leatherman Broke :'(

It's only a minor problem with my Wave (hard to describe; the little prong things where the handle meets the plier-head have broken off and now the tool won't hold itself closed) and although the tool is still largely functional, I keep thinking that it's only a few years old and such a...

    Flint Tools.

There are plenty of threads in the various other sections relating to the manufacture of flint tools (a skill I'm hoping to develop myself at some point), but I have a few questions about the practicalities of them. I can see that they obviously did the job in the past, but what is their...

    Axes, anyone?

Well, I've finally decided to invest in a decent axe but I know nothing about them other than that good things happen when you swing them at lumps wood. I've used them before on camps but I'm far from an experienced axe-man and wouldn't know where to start when looking for a quality tool, but...

    Complete budget kit.

If you were to assemble a new kit for the lowest price possible, what items would you be sticking in your (cheap) rucksack? I figured this might be both a fun thing to think about and a useful resource for thoe of us with light wallets! Here would be (and practically is :D) mine: Knife -...

There is currently no Wikipedia entry for Bushcraft.

Wikipedia is a superb and popular internet resource that you may have stumbled across in your browsings and for those that haven't, then it is enough to say that it is a unique site in that it's a complete encyclopedia created entirely by the people who use it. The open and anarchistic (in the...

Any tips for sharpening scandi knives?

I'm no expert on these things and don't want to screw up my new puukko... :?: If this has been answered before, I'd be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction. Thanks a lot!

I ordered a new sharpening stone and couldn't help but pick up a WildFinn Puukko...

... This was beneficial in two ways; 1) I am soon to recieve what looks to be a positively smashing tool, and 2) I now can't afford any food so my hunter-gatherer skills should improve considerably! :o): This'll be my first scandi knife and my first carbon steel blade so when I recieve the...

Useful Bushcraft areas around the UK?

Sorry if it's been asked before, but if a person were to travel for a backwoods camp of a week or so within the UK, where would you suggest? I'm thinking of doing something like this in Scotland or somewhere at some point, but I have no idea of the legalities of the different areas etc. so...

It's a stupid time at night and I feel like some adventure...

... but seeing as even if it wasn't the middle of the night, all my kit is still soaked from my last excursion, so I'll just post on the internet instead. :sulkoff: Well, these introduction things are never the most comfortable affairs, so I'll just say that I'm called Joe, I'm eighteen years...
