    cold weather photos

I was at a lecture by Martin Hartley recently and he suggested wrapping the camera in several plastic bags when you take it indoors, and taking lots of silica gel. Personally, given the chance, I'd try to leave the camera somewhere cool (e.g. a boot room) if possible, and subject to security...

    where did your username comefrom

I played the Artful Dodger in a school production of Oliver! back when I were a lad and, following a suggestion from one of my teachers that I was method acting, it stuck.

    Northern Wilderness, your thoughts?

I think that one of the reasons behind this is that a TV programme like this has to appeal to a wide enough audience for a broadcaster to be prepared to fund and schedule it. Ray could make an instructional video on 15 different methods of firelighting but I doubt it would be very popular beyond...

    Northern Wilderness, your thoughts?

It's the same cameraman (Barrie Foster) he's worked with in the past.

what do you take to occupy yourself when its dark?

Hmmm... That's a good idea! I like reading and I'll often pick up something to read locally to where I'm, staying - e.g. I picked up a copy of Coyote Stories by Mourning Dove in a New Age/hippy store in Joshua Tree before I headed into the National Park last year. There's nothing like reading...

Anyone going to see RM tonight (22nd Oct)?

I really enjoyed this evening's lecture. Ray's a good speaker. As he has done in his past television series', Ray based his narrative around the stories of some individuals' experiences of travelling through the wilderness during the early days of the Hudson's Bay Company, to the extent that it...

    Elitism?

That's what I think too. My understanding was that the name "denim" comes from "serge de Nimes", Nimes being a town in France where the cloth was made and exported from.

    New Ray Mears.

Looks like it's currently scheduled for an hour afterwards on BBC HD (i.e. Sunday 10pm).

    Low Alpine Sting Review

That's just 60g less than the current British Army-issue bergen (3.56kg, as measured on my kitchen scales, including both sidepouches and the yoke) which has a 120l capacity, and the same weight as Arc'teryx's biggest pack, the Bora 95 (3.5kg, according to their website) which has a 99l...
