Do you have any tips on photographing the Aurora? I have tried here in the last couple of weeks as there were reports of it being sighted. I did get something very very faint on the camera one time.

Stick the camera on manual, iso. 800, 15 seconds @ f4 worked for me.
If you have a faster lens it might be worth opening up a bit more but longer exposures tended to lose some of the "texture" of the lights as they moved around.
I take it for down here in NE. Scotland a longer exposure would be better?
When I saw them out the back garden last year it was a very faint white moving light to the north which turned green using the camera over a 30sec exposure. Even then it came out pretty poor.
Since you were using the SLR, are there special batteries that work well in the cold or would a standard official canon battery be fine?

Out of the Dozen or so packs I took with me the Canon ones and one Hahnel one were the ones that worked best.
All needed the extra warmth of a hand warmer sachet on the outside of the camera to work for long though.

The military presence you saw was because of the bi-annual Cold Response
exercise. More on that here, if you're interested:

I've tought about being outdoors in northern Norway during earlier
years exercises, but I've always been afraid off getting overrun by a
65 ton Leopard 2 tank. If I'd been in your snow castle I would
have marked it thoroughly with chem lights, reflectors and stripes.
Anyway, your report is exactly what I find most interesting about
beeing outdoors; snow, cold, alone, gear and philosophy...
