Cheers,

can you identify a post that has it Drew? - that may help to explain things.... ;)

I think ( shoot me down in flames if i'm wrong ) its from the Survivalist Mentality of not making the assumption that Just because Yesterday was like Today , Tomorrow will be the same.
To Prepare ( 'prep' ) by putting essentials supplies of food , water or purification and other equipment aside and generally making some preps to ensure safety and well being if events occur.

Now , up to you how you view that stance and preparation , I guess your or mine perception of it may be altered if we have ever experienced or witnessed events that can seriously upset our normal life.

If we haven't I guess we may view it strangely , if your have experienced anything to upset the normal life or been to countries and witness how social order and utilities can , occasionaly go sideways , your view may appreciate the idea.

EDIT Or we can imagine a scenario arising in our own existence.

Power Cuts
Storms
Civil Unrest
Snow
Zombie Armada led by Lych king Napoleon In the Irish Channel.

To Prep , to make preparations.

I think you've hit the nail on the head :D

TeeDee has it right, its all about making sure you and your loved ones can survive 'off grid' in the event of a natural disaster (or man made to to that), keep yourselves warm, sheltered, safe and well fed.

There are a few here who keep food, fuel and water stocks at home, I keep about a three month supply.

A lot of folk were left without power for days this winter, how many candles have you got at home? Your nice little gas lantern won't last long so do you have spare gas or paraffin for your hurricane lanterns or Tilley/Vapalux lanterns. How long would your paraffin last, have you spare mantles for your lanterns?

I think I could run Primus stoves and four hurricane lanterns on around 700ml a day, thats cooking for four and basic light but thats about five litres a week, more if I want strong light and use a pressure lantern; so that four litre tub you got from B&Q is only good for about a week. How much flour do you have to hand? How would you cook bread if your gas and electricity fail? Your family could soon get fed up eating a few crackers. Got many cans of corned beef, spam canned stewed steak in the cupboards? How much rice and pasta do you have? Got any dried milk? evaporated milk, sugar?

Prepping is not about surrealism any longer, our infrastructure is getting stretched and could easily fail so so easily (think of this years snow knocking out the power) IMHO prepping is just common sense.
