The Boonie hat

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I've had a number of boonie type hats in my time and by and large I don't like 'em. The brims tend to be too floppy in any wind stronger than a sheeps fart, so it flips up and leaves you exposed to the sun. When the weather gets a bit warmer I'll be getting a tilley, and relegating my boonie to rucksac duties.

Sorry but I cannot consider a Boonie to be a hat…actually I think a Boonie should be classified as a misshapen fabric atrocity. :D

I will take a Tilley or an Akubra any day over a flapply bucket shaped dishrag....aka Boonie.

Here here...well said !! :)

Its only a hat, does the job well in my opinion.

John, I'd love a Tilley hat but I'll be :tapedshut :tapedshut :tapedshut :tapedshut if I'll pay the money they ask for them;)

In the heavy rain of recent times, I'm wearing a baseball cap, and its great at keeping the rain off my specs, although my daughter says I look like a middle aged hoodie/mugger. Don't care, just need to see a few steps in front of me in heavy rain:)

Over the years the price comes down -I have worn out two of them and had them replaced - that makes them 1/3 the price you paid originally!
Long term ecconomic viability!

I used to have a Barbour waxed hat (got in a sale) that was styled after a Boonie hat which i loved to bits and practically had nailed to my head during the winter. I lost it while half asleep on a bus and of course no bugger handed it in and have been unable to find another despite a lot of effort.

They don't make the same model anymore so I am rather stuffed. I thought about waxing a similar one they made in plain cotton but I'd cock it up and wax the lining as well no doubt. None of the rival (and cheeper) brands fit as well, sad to say.

I look a complete Twonk in any hat I wear...but I don't care :D :D :D :D :D

I have several and use them all they are IMHO the greatest hat ever made. A tan-colored one for summer or warm weather, a blaze orange one for deer season and a camouflage gore-tex one for hunting everything else.

You cannot beat a Tilley - they realy do come acroos with the lifetime guarantee! A hat for life!

Top comment John. If you look on their website you'll see they also make a hat very like the Jap hat mentioned earlier and one specificallt designed for colder conditions.:D
