Anyone a fan of tinned fish?

My lazy lunch is a tin of sardines or mackerel, some cous cous and a bit of marmite. All sat in a drawer at work so no excuse not to have something! Sounds a bit odd but it suits me.

Out of interest - how does the marmite become applied? infused into the cous -cous?

This thread prompted me to get these two out off the cellar to do a comparison.

Two cans of different brands of mackerel in Catalan sauce.

Curiously, one can is the opposite way to the other, by which I that both are ring-pull, one (Saupiquet) has the printing on the can that reads with the ring-pull on top, the other (Mouettes d'Arvor) is printed the opposite way up.

After eating both straight from the cold cans, they are very similar.

The mackerel in each is delicious: firm, meaty flavour, not at all fishy and no bones.

The sauce is the big difference. There's more sauce and less fish in the Saupiquet can.

Both sauces are good, but the Saupiquet sauce is a bit thin with small and soft pieces of onion and pepper.

The Mouettes d'Arvor sauce is thicker, richer and the pieces of pepper and onion are more numerous, bigger and have better texture.

This has been a family favourite for some time! Anchovies, crisps, hard cheese, cured meat. Open the bag and toss it all together! Finger food fun!

I've a truckle of that exact same cheese in the fridge we didn't eat at xmas... Is it good? Not had it before. Wasn't exactly cheap. Also have some 'truffle and hard cheese' flavour crisps.. and anchovies... What's the meat? Looks tasty all in all.

Today’s lunch is whelks! I have had fresh whelks before, my brother used to live in Whitstable and I can’t resist trying strange sounding food. However, I wasn’t sure how tinned whelks would hold up.

The answer is: very well. These were really good - nice and meaty texture, lots of savoury flavour with a light tingle from the chilli and a nice hint of garlic. Perfect with some buttered, toasted muffins and a pint of cold lager.

I can imagine this is @Toddy’s idea of a nightmare in a tin! But for folks who like this sort of thing, I can highly recommend.
