After admiring Woodspirits' latest work, I commented about an hour and a half ago that I might have a go myself. What the heck, I went for it.

I had carved a wooden beaker which had then split, so I salvaged a bit of it as ma practice piece. I wasn't expecting much, but after some hacking with the small woodchisels (I have one of those cheapy Draper carving sets - it was a Christmas pressie a while back), and a rub down with some brown boot polish, I have this.

Ok, he isn't scary. In fact he looks old and tired, but that's ok because I know the feeling, so he and I are now kindred spirits. :)

It was fun to do, and if a hacker like me can do this in an hour or so, then it is worth having a go if you are thinking about it.

Let's see yours then, and put mine to shame.

its a good start, as you say its a practice piece. a bit more definition here and there and it will soon come to life! that draper set you have is fine, i have one myself. brilliant for branches about thumb size, good work mate if you ever get to one of my meets, bring your gouges! :)

Good job mate. (looks a little Jedward like lol)

this was my first attempt just before christmas (this might expose my secret santa status but I have wanted to share this for months now)

Thanks Steve. As it had been a cup previously there wasn't a lot of wood to play with, so I had to keep it quite shallow. The boot polish also showed up every imperfection in my carving (which is lots), but for a first go with the chisels I am quite happy.

Much better then my attempts because I had none :D :D so you can be proud of youself. I'm thinking about woodspirit for years and actually I saw a nice piece of birch laying in the woods that someone has left behind. Soooooooo the competition is on!! :D
