Ita muses me that the term "redneck" is considered derogatory - by "townies"
I know a good few people who see daylight only through glass, and only ever expose themselves to open air for a few minutes a day going to and from the car; when they do get out and about they consider any sign of the outdoors on their skin as a blemish!
I didn't get the entire 'redneck' thing until I read some of the American posts here and had to google it

Fun for a photo to put the baby into the watermelon like that, but the juice is used to remove skin blemishes and the rind is now supposed to be a natural viagra
Maybe not a brilliant idea for a baby seat.

One of those jokes reminded me that Daryl was the name of "the redneck" in The Walking Dead.

No. We don't. We wear that name with pride. But we have a rather good self deprecating sense of humor. As evidenced by the quotes from Jeff Foxworthy you linked.

Yep. In the US it started in West Virginia early in the 20th century when the coal miners unionized and the dispute turned violent. The miners/unionists wore red bandanas around their necks to identify themselves and a northern news reporter dubbed them "rednecks." The name stuck and spread to mean all rural Southerners.
I vaguely recall that a similar use of red bandanas occurred even earlier in Scotland or Wales as well?
I have a red neck. It means I work hard outdoors. A term of insult? From someone with soft hands who cannot hoe a row of beans? Jealousy more likely!

We've been eating pickled watermelon rind for generations
Or if we don't have enough to pickle, we just fling them to the livestock.

and mother nature amply endowed me, but that girl puts me in the shade and then some I do wish I had the confidence to wear shorts and a vest in the heat though. That lady would do as a model for one of the caveman venus'

That's a point actually.....redneck, not from scarves but from sunburn. Sunburn's not a good idea; it hurts and it leaves long term damage too
but being outdoors, in fresh air, working hard....I think that's very good for us I judge how much sunshine I've got by how many freckles I've got
Today, technically nearly into Summer has been lightly overcast all day. Not a sign of that hot yellow ball thing in the sky at all. Just diffuse white light. Typical for this part of the world really. That said, the gardens and woods are growing like jungles so the plants seem to have evolved to suit it too.

Tbh I'm not fond of watermelon; it's a very pretty colour but there's no taste to it. It looks like it should be wonderfully sweet and juicy and instead it really is just watery. It won't grow in my garden either so I suppose it's just as well I'm not fond of it. Even marrows struggle here though, and I do like them baked or picked very, very young.

It's sweet here! Though not sickeningly so. Many here eat it with a dash of salt. As for growing, it's very picky; it'll only grow in new ground or in ground that's only planted every 7 years at most. And it only grows in hot to warm climates (Southern Colorado at the coldest) and best on sandy soil.
Watermelon Party Recipe:
Take one medium watermelon (about 18"-24" long and 12"-14" diameter) and cut a very small pug from the rind on top (just large enough for the lip of a spirits bottle) Pour a bottle of good rum into the melon and replace the plug. Refrigerate overnight then serve watermelon shots at your party.
