Hi.

I'm after a new axe, can anyone recommend a good one please. I've seen Granfors Bruks and Hultafors but can't make my mind up.

Cheers

Is this your first axe, if so I would get a cheaper axe. there are some bargains on ebay. learn to sherpen it before you buy an expensive one.

I would agree... Learn to use it properly as well...... Axes are not hammers or spades...

Thats the one that Mike brought... Ive got it at mine at the mo..., looks a nice axe, feels nice to hold as well :)

I personally think the small forest size (18 - 20" helve) is almost the worst of all possible axe designs. If you wish to swing 2 handed go for a 24" helve (Scandinavian Forest length in GB). If you are only going to use it one handed - 14" is plenty for the helve. 18" is too long for one hand and too short for two.

You could do worse than try these, cheaper and IMO better than a Grans.

Good splitters and up to all camp tasks. Nice weight and length too. Take a nice edge and the profile splits really well.

As a possessor of moderately sized hands, I found the handle of the Husky hatchet just too chunky for me. Not a problem I've had with any other small axe that I've picked up. I still rate it as a good value tool, just not one I can use comfortably.

Cheers,
Leif

I find myself in agreement with this. If you swing and miss with an 18" handle the likelihood of hitting yourself is high.

No I will not, you can do that yourself.....

Oh ok then...
