It's worth noting that your blood sugars have a big impact on what happens to the fat within your diet. I can have fatty foods when i want, I just avoid sugars for around 4 hours after.
If your sugars get to a certain level then you produce insulin to correct it, problem is that the insulin will help store excess fats.
Knowing the difference between simple and complex carbs helps too.

At least that's what my buddies dietitian sister keeps telling me!

One thing which I think is also relevant is that we are all genetically different. What is good for one person is not necessarily good for another.

It's not for everyone, but for the last month, I've been trying intermittent fasting. I'd been aware of the idea of low-calorie, high-nutrient diets for years and I knew about the research that's been done into the possibility that calorie restriction can extend your lifespan. Bit it looked a very miserable way to eat!

Since I saw this Horizon programme on the BBC, I've been giving it a go three days a week. In the last month, I've lost eight pounds and I feel *fantastic*. Yes, it's hard not eating very much of anything for a day, but the psychological boost that you have from knowing you can wake up the following day to a good breakfast makes it doable for me.

On my fast days, I just eat fruit. The advice in the program is to keep under 1/4 of the calories you'd normally eat in a day. 500 for women and 600 or so for chaps. So I have a couple of pieces of fruit at each mealtime, which keeps the wolf from the door and helps if I need to ride any great distance on my bike. I drink tea and coffee as I usually would, but stay away from anything else with a calorific value.

The idea is, not only should I lose weight, I'll live longer and stand a better chance of not losing my marbles as I get older...

Thanks to Doc's new year weight loss motivation thread giving me a kick start I've lost 3 stone this year. my bmi and whr are normal. Waist has gone from 38" to 32".

Basically the mantra of eat less, move more is the key.

Doing the couch to 5k running thing and an easy kettlebell workout 2 or 3 times a week sorted me out.

I eat sensibly and have a cheat day every week to stop the body going into storage mode.

The only problem is my old clothes are so big I look like a tramp!!

A girl who works with my girlfriend has been doing this for about a month, and it works. She has lost 1/2 a stone. She is quite a petite girl anyway, so its not just the lbs falling off very big people when they start a diet. We are going to be giving this a go from tomorrow. and as I am able to eat normally for most of the week I reckon it is doable.

I also got my bike out for the first time in 7 years over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. I used to be fit, but like most of us as we get older and have other commitments I let myself get lazy & comfortable, but I am in the frame of mind now to do something about it.

When I was fit I was constantly around 11st 7 lbs I am now 14 st .

Mark Sisson of Primal Blueprint also talks a bit about intermittent fasting. I might give it a go too - but I think it takes alot of self control to overcome a lifetime eating habit of 3 (or more) meals a day. I like Lyope's idea of eating just fruit on those days. I am a self confessed glutton and I do enjoy eating lots - particularly lots of good old fashioned BBQ, so a fasting day or two would also help offset those gluttonous days. Here is Mark Sissons 7-part analysis of Intermittent Fasting.

Why Fast? Part One – Weight Loss

Why Fast? Part Two – Cancer

Why Fast? Part Three – Longevity

Why Fast? Part Four – Brain Health

Why Fast? Part Five – Exercise

Why Fast? Part Six – Choosing a Method

Why Fast? Part Seven – Q&A

There appear to be several ways to go about it - including literally not eating for an entire 24 hour period (certainly not for me - i'd collapse). The 500 calorie is certainly doable though.

It was an interesting documentary, the results were impressive, especially as the presenter didn't look fat to begin with. I cut back to 1500cals and stopped eating anything after 8pm.

I might give fasting a try, might take a bit of juggling around exercise days/work.

I had to give up the beer which led to a good weightloss. Now trying to keep to the fasting 2 days, not wholly successfully (difficult to do when off visiting and staying at my girlfriend's as we usually end up out to eat), but trying. Also on fasting days eating Chia seeds, soaking them in fruit juice makes a fruity porridge like meal that I'm quite enjoying. Since I was starting to show signs of IBS, the additional soluble fibre seems to be helping with that too.

Hello,
I cut wheat from my diet, and somehow lost weight without trying. I cut it or other reasons - I'm fairly certain I'm intolerant to it. I have much more energy, and less bloating/wind and other symptoms of my intolerance. Subsequently found ths website:

http://www.marksdailyapple.com/

I've not bought any of the books or anything, but his ideas ring a bell wih me. In a weird way, they fit in with bushcrafting too. Eat like a hunter gatherer.

I totally agree with this. I started this in July, and lost 6kg in the first 3 weeks.
You should give it a try!

Greetings
Chris

Well done Hog,

I Used to weigh in at 23 Stone 4 years or so ago, the had a scare, I am now 17 1/2 stone,

Thought about a diet , but thought no... long term seeing that most that diet tend to fall back into old habits, started to cut out all the snacks, and did not buy the biscuits, sweets, and all the other things that just seem to fall in the shopping trolley as you go round the shop, cut down the portion sizes, and got more exercise,

Yes its been a long time dropping, all most not noticeable , but one time of year I do not bother is xmas, as long as over the time its a downward trend, not found it a drag, pain or a problem.

Anyone see that documentary a while back (might have been a a Horizon programme) about diet and exercise.
The presenter was looking into the latest science on diet and exercise.
One of the most remarkable parts was the increase in lifespan of rats on a restricted calorie diet, the average lifespan increase was 40%.
Back on topic......
The other revelation, to me any way, was fasting. The presenter did about a month (IIRC) of fasting 2 days a week, and very short duration exercise at maximum heart rate i.e. 3 minutes per week.
The results were astounding, and contradict the current accepted approach to diet and exercise.

well worth a watch if you can find it.

A well timed reminder! Since I added my smug post about being leaner and fitter since I retired, I had a check up at the doctor's. Once again I need to lose weight- about 2 stone ie 28 lbs, which ironically is the weight of my basic fravelling pack.

I've spent years trying to shave the odd ounce of two off the pack weight with little success, mainly because I do carry only what I need. Obviously the route to carrying less is to take the weight off me rather than the pack.

The above weight losing suggestions are all helpful and appropriate at this time of year of more food and less exercise. A synthesis of all the suggestions semms to lead to what we all really know. To lose weight we need to consume fewer calories and burn more through exercise.

Now- has anyone got any useful tips for increasing will-power?

Well Done Hog, as well.
I have lost 2 1/2 stone since July by cutting down on eating crap and a bit more exercise. So well done know how hard it is. Hard bit now is sticking to it eh.

Portion control is what I learned about watching a cooking show called the Hairy Bikers wanting to lose weight.
