Got to watch this tonight

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Right then, my views on this so far are as follows.

What a complete tit that man is.

Totally made from the things from his land? Oh yeah, the plywood for some of his walls came from where?
That floor is just crap, might work OK if it were on the ground but on a raised floor it will just crack, no matter how much hairdressers hair he chucks into it.
The safe stove might be OK but lets face it, making a woodburning stove isn't rocket science is it. I can get my head round him wanting to play with the thermic lance because its a cool toy, despite the fact that after he had removed the insides from the safe a oxy acetylene cutter (or an iron powder fed oxy acetylene cutter if the alloy content is too high) would have been far neater.
Got to be the most labour intensive not that great shed I've ever seen, if I had a labourer as feckless as him I'd sack him, then burn his boots.

Anyone of you lot that thinks he's doing a good job? Give me a shout when you want a real shed cos if you are willing to pay for that numpty to faff about for months I can make money on this deal.

If I had a dog like him I'd put it down.

I don't hate the programme - I take what I can from it.....rabbit skin glue was pretty damned impressive. Sure its not all how I would do it, but I like to see people actually "doing stuff". Not convinced completely by the presenter, but I have a love of learning, of simple accesible, practical things. The execution may be flawed, but the concept is great - we need more stuff of people getting off the sofa and doing stuff we haven't seen before - rather than silly pseudo eco nonsense or another "me too" reality show.

Agreed, (ish) I'd forgotten about the rabbit skin glue, that was OK but it is pseudo eco nonsense at its most stupid in my perhaps not so humble opinion.

Oh sure - thats what I mean about ignoring it...I just take away the rabbit glue as a useful thing to try! All the eco twaddle is just greenwash - as all this stuff is unless we are prepared to cut 90+% from the consumption of each and every person. But some of the techniques can be used to help people live a cheaper, more self reliant life...

I guess my point is that I learned one thing that interested me and that I will try - I was researching making glues and varnished the other day as it happens. Thats better than 99% of production TV

I just can't imagine being tasked to make something then pratting about as much as him, its infuriating to watch.
Like watching a twelve year old builder.
There's going to be a whole new breed of yoghurt weaver that thinks he knows what he's doing and wants things made the same when he's just an complete numpty.

It's a damming indictment of modern TV is this is seen as being better than the rest.

disapointed to be honest . but reading this thread had a thought imagine a program called british reds retirement home .now that would be worth watching

Be dead boring if it was honest - lots of me scratching my head trying to figure out how to do stuff - and finally getting right after many attempts going wrong.

I just like people who go and and actually do something. Threads like tombears rushlights....pure gold....John's yurt....woodburners people make....

A 30 second example.....one of the beardy weirdy neighbours stuck his head over the fence today whilst I was scrubbing out IBC tanks.....and asked me to take some photos for them

The three guys all restore old vehicles...and they all have examples of the same 1950s Ford vans

[So I scooped up my camera and took some piccs for them.

Now I know the square root of *** all about vintage cars. But they were happy and animated, comparing features of their 60 year old vans and discussing stuff they had done. Fantastic! One of them - my best mate round here - can make anything out of metal - he mills, lathes, forges, welds, makes springs, cuts keys, restores everything from tractors to unimogs to old Ransome lawn mowers. How cools is that.....he could be in front of the box, but no. My other eighty year old neighbour takes me out to see the Shire horses he feeds every day. Superb. Life is a participation sport, not a spectator sport.

If this series encourages a few people to make some glue, or whatever...its okay by me!

As the saying goes, WDYJSOYTSAGADSMLBI!

I don't mind the programme, by and large it's a prog about a successful man who wants to spend his money building himself a den in the woods. I suspect he uses the eco nonsense to justify it, he probably has a severe case of middleclass guilt about his success. Not quite sure why there's so much hostility, it's not like what he's doing is harming anyone else.

I always thought that guy was a bit off ever since I saw an episode of Grand Designs with a real eco-home in the woods.

The owner had a composting toilet with a bucket of sawdust next to it. The presenter's response to this was to lift the lid, place his face in the hole and inhale deeply as if he were sampling the finest wine, and then comment "it's not too bad at all is it?"

The look of horror on the face of the owner said it all.....

It would have been better if they didn't bother with the fake greenwash rubbish and were more honest and just said we're doing what we want because we can.

The glass was a good example, the obvious 'green' thing to do would be to reuse some of the huge amount of glass that's chucked in landfill each year rather than make your own. However, it looked like good fun to make and I really liked the window.

Nah! I've used that toilet and met the owner and he wouldn't have been phased by Kevin's remarks. He was off camera when it was made anyway.

The facial horror was Kevin's when Ben admitted to still using the woods as a loo. 'Too much information' was his view.

I think its a laugh and boys playing with toys. Its entertaining and i cant the see the problem, its just a giggle.
I think half the problem is expectation. If you want to see guys spending a week sawing oak up by hand in a pit then you may be disappointed.
Yes he is a bit annoying but as are most presenters I find. Lots of daft stuff and messing about, I liked it. As for a thermal lance gimme a shot!

What he said
Its fun to watch people doin stuff, good entertainment . I just watched it on the internet coz I dont get real British tv over here. I will watch the next episode as well.
I would love to have a go at splitting wood with gun powder , what a good laugh

Although I think they should not have bothered trying to make out it was an eco project, more like a bit of fun building a place to hang out in

The source being the DailyMail, complains being faulty washing machines, dusty fans and heating problems.... Check out any new build and they would be the least of the teething problems. Like i say i am not a subscriber to his fanclub just all seems a little witch burning.

Social housing and experimental building was always going to throw up problems. Most housing associations we work with would have refused to have anything fitted that the tenants could break or moan about. We're doing some eco housing at the moment and it's been whitted down from something quite special to pattern book blandness by planners, commitees and anyone else who can have a say. I think Kevin did well to get 'his' scheme though in the form it is and has been let down by the contractor as far as I can see.

I just watched the second one tonight, and again I enjoyed it. I have no expectations and I thought the glue was amazing, the floor was interesting, making glass with fire would be fun and who wouldn't enjoy making a massive wood burner out of a safe? It's just a guy with money and a piece of land having a laugh, is it sour grapes I detect in some of these posts? Why do so many people get so upset about tv programmes on here? Reminds me of Ray Mears Northern Wilderness. People were logging on to post there wasn't enough bushcraft going on. I still don't understand that!
