Thanks everyone for your comments, sorry to RB for highjacking the thread a bit ;)
I'm going to the May moot on the Monday (can't make the whole weekend I'm afraid) so if anyone wants a closer look track me down then. I'll be the one in green :D with a braided baldric neck sheath.

The tutorial has been written and now gone to the proof house for tweeking and spell checking. I'm hoping it wont be long now...

Cheers

Mark

I had a few more Woodlore sheath's to make and i decided to make a few for myself.

I changed the profile a little on my own to make them a little less bulky.

I changed the stitch spacing on these to 5:1 because people seem to think the 7:1 I normally use looks like machine stitching :( .

Next is to start rescaling them ,when i have time  .

Very good RB :)
Any reason you don't wet form these other than the original isn't?

Cheers

I have wet formed quite a few sheaths and i find that over time and with use they start to loosen a little.
My Alan Wood - Bushcrafter came with quite a nice wet formed sheath but it's now very loose and didn't really see a lot of use.
My original WS Woodlore sheath that holds the knife by friction didn't loosen to the same extent and still retains the knife well despite a lot of use.
I have made a few Woodlore sheaths as per the original design and they are all wearing well - like my original ,they soften up a little with use but all continue to hold the knives securely.
I do still wet form and i think a nice wet formed sheath looks great but I'm happier with a friction fit on a real user.
The other reason is that i recently realised that there can be quite a variation in the scale dimensions between Woodlore's and as im making most of these without having the actual knife that they will hold it's better to make them friction fit.

Hi Rapidboy,
I was just wondering how you go about acheiving the friction fit for a sheath? - Is it simply a matter of stitching it so that it's a tight fit to the handle, or is there some other technique?
I ask as I'm about to make a sheath for a bushcraft knife and I'm debating the best design to use.

cheers
Matt

By the way - hi! - first post on here.

Best to make a template Matt.
Use a strip of the leather you are going to use and fold it neatly around the knife until you get the sort of fit you want to achieve.

Then transfer this to paper and design your sheath around this measurement.

Getting a few small jobs tidied up at last.
I had planned to make a leather belt sheath for my Pack Pal from the start but the kydex one supplied turned out to be much better than i had expected so this has been sitting on my bench part finished for ages.

Again it's a friction fit rather than wet formed.

I finished the stitching today and it's just been dyed so it will get a little lighter when it dries.

A product called Fiebings Professional Oil Dye.
To get a nice even finish you can wet the surface but i like to put it onto a dry surface to create a mottled effect.

Made my first "left hooker" today.

Was a bit embarrassing when swmbo caught me in front of the mirror with one on each hip practicing my "quick draw".

They're both good but I'm rather attached to the plain pouch design :D

WOW RB, You're getting better and better with those sheaths mate! (thumbs up smiley)
I prefer the sheath in post #36 - it looks more lively, robust and traditional because of the thicker thread that's used. But the one in #31 is great too :D
