I doubt if they ever actually "buried" anything "under" tree. It would be too hard to dig through the roots. More likey they would have buried whatever and then planted a tree over the grave if such was indeed ever practiced.

You got it right Spandit. Hamptoncourt they buried an ox and then put a vine on top, its still growing, I am sure Cardinal Wolsey would be most proud of his work!
Got a mate who's grandmother died (aged 94 IIRC) and his father buried her in the wood on their land. All done legal and above board.
That's what she wanted. Dignified and well done.
On the day she died my mates father turned up at my mates house wanting to borrow a shovel and a pick, I asked what was he digging and his reply was "A grave for my mother".
That shut me up anyway.
