Where do you get your wood from? I'm convinced there must be a better option than getting a single knife block from Brisa or the Good stuff shop, which is what I'm currently doing.
Thanks Heath

truth is if you want a few small pieces of stabilised wood then the likes of BRISA or Pikebite on BB offer exactly that service. If you want more or are prepared to work with non stabilised wood there are other sources. Is it wood for knife handles you want and are you mostly doing stick tang or full tang? I am quite happy drying my own bits of wood for stick tangs but think stabilised is probably a good idea for full tang particularly if you are going to sell them to other users.

I was just going to post that Axminster did as I've used them in the past, but I've just looked and they don't seem to be any more.

It would be better if you could find a cabinet maker, boat builder or similar, who would let you look through their scrap bin.

Alternatively, there are some dealers on BB and Ebay that specialise in scales and blocks for knife handles.

I was wondering how long it would take for a smart alec to post 'trees' as an answer, well done Robin.

I'm mostly interested in making stick tang knives and I've never used stabilised wood before.

Candid question: what would it take to actually use wood collected in the forest, like dead standing wood or rest of cut down tree? How long would it take to let dry and how to prepare it to avoid splitting.
I understand stabilized is better but it would have its own charm to use a nice piece of wood collected during ones hiking.

OK what wood do you want I have loads of English hardwoods, mostly of the plainer sorts. Do you have a bandsaw to saw it up? or are you happy sawing it up by hand? I could cut some slabs say 1 1/2" thick with a chainsaw, do you ever get up into Derbyshire?

Alternatively for local sources, for dry hardwoods of uncertain origin then local cabinetmakers, window firms, etc. For green local timber look up tree surgeons in your yellow pages, they generally have a yard with heaps of timber and are more than happy for folk to come and take some bits away to make stuff from whether knife handles or spoons.
