Always start preparing for winter in August.
I have my coal storage area stuffed with bags of coal for the multifuel burner. The jackery is topped up and ready for power needs , candles placed strategically, each with a lighter or box of matches. New batteries in lamps, restocked the battery holder, and another gas canister and bottle of lamp oil bought this week.
Bedding has been washed, aired in the sun, and is ready for the change over, though not needed just yet.
Need to stock up on a few food items, such as powdered milk, stock cubes and flour, other than that, I'm sorted, with 50%of Xmas presents covered already.
Got my cards for 50p a box in a sale, and Monday will be buying stamps before they go up again in a week or so.
No vehicle anymore, so that's one prep I don't have to worry about.
Pretty relaxed about things this year, it's a pretty normal way of life out in the boonies to make sure your bases are covered.

Two words...

Storm Amy

Right now we've got trees still in leaf but blowing around like maniacs and bands of torrential rain. We'll see what the morning brings. I think it's a mess out there.

Our gutters were cleaned, but I reckon they'll need done again :sigh:
I live in a very modern house. I've stashed enough batteries and led lights to keep things light. Canisters for stoves to cook upon if needed.
Pantry's full, and I reckon that heating the person works as well as heating the whole house if the power goes out, so hot water bottles and warm quilts and socks :)

So far, in my little valley, just a bit of wind and rain. Nothing more than normal late autumn/early winter bad weather. It's not over yet tho, and could get worse.
Nothing like up north tho. Keep safe .

Quite a blow, supposedly 70mph, here at the moment but ok so far. The big blast predicted for the W Midlands in Sunday has been toned down to a strong breeze and the warnings removed.

Just watched a blackbird flash past at about 40mph. Does anyone know whether it can sail against the wind to get back home?

We had a few hours of very strong winds/rain late in the evening in W Wales, then it moderated to "usual" blowy/wet. We are though in a bit of a dip in the side of the hill and relatively sheltered, I bet it was blowing a hooley at the top of the hill.

Just got the southern edge of Amy down here, gusts of 70km/h this morning & a bit of light rain. Still a bit blowy but the sun has come out & it is very mild. The wind has shaken down quite a few walnuts, so that's a bonus.
Winter still appears some way off, especially as most of the trees are still green.

Woke to sunshine, bit blowy, had to hold on to my hat a few times on the waddle into town, river is up, so we must have had a bit of heavy rain on the top of the moor, but other than that, nothing major.

Caravan not still. Not good for my beauty sleep.

Everything seems fine here but trees down. Life in Perthshire. Trees.

Many power cuts all around me, but we stayed on grid in my area.
Barely noticed a thing, apart from being a bit blowy and some heavy rain overnight.
Canoeists are having a brilliant day on the swollen River today.

It's meant to get down to 0C on Sunday morning! How exciting. I think I will head out early into the woods with the dog to enjoy the first properly winter air.

It's also supposed to bucket it down tomorrow night, so much to my wife's bemusement I am going to go and camp out in my new hooped bivvy to see if it's actually waterproof.

We don´t have winter yet but last saturday there was a mass collision with 50 cars involved on a stretch of motorway in southern Finland.
Thick fog (visibility only about 50-100 meters) and black ice on the tarmac. And people driving normal high speed dispite the fog.

Oof, that's sad to hear. Hopefully everyone ends up OK.

Much better to arrive late than dead.
