Why is a Blackjack Black??

This afternoon I had a mosey round the Royal Cornwall Museum; Always a good way to while away a rainy afteroon, I find.

Anyhow, they had a massive (must have been at least 2ft tall) blackjack (a leather jug.)

And it was black (Hence the name, I guess)

Did they brewers pitch the outside as well as the inside?
