Whittling knife recommendations

  • BushMoot: Come along to the amazing Summer Moot 31st July - 5th August (extended Moot : 27th July - 8th August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I have two really nice carving knives that I bought as upgrades from my mora one, one is a Hans Karlsson Carving Knife that I paid around £80 for I think, and the other, I handled myself using a Kay Embretsen carving blade, I do prefer the Kay Embretsen one, that was a similar price for just the blade, they’re about £180 odd if you get the complete knife, although they are beautifully made with different colour handles for each size, but way above what I could afford, certainly if you start buying more than one size.

It's hard not to want more shiny things when as we know, the two straight- bladed moras are more than adequate (the shorter 120 being my favourite). As is the hook knife (not the double-edged version, it's a deathtrap!).
Samuel Alexander did a video recently demonstrating that the Moras are enough.

But.........ooooh shiny!

I upgraded to an Adam Ashworth sloyd (70 or 90mm, it's not to hand), which I love, and I have a very small 4cm blade of his which I've yet to handle. Excellent bevel angle and very very slicey.

For hooks I've been using the Svante Djarv hook knife for years and it's the one I reach for most often. I've got an Orford hybrid flatter curve knife which is very versatile. I think his sloyds would be excellent as well, but I've not tried them.
Also I've got a LH Hans Karlsson hook which I love. More useful than you might think for push cuts as a RH carver.

I think handle shape plays a big part, but mostly budget.

Check out Woodsmith, Wood Tools and Woodland Craft Supplies if you need any more reasons to drool.

I have enjoyed the M23 Ranger Cub. Not fancy wood handle, but great ergonomics, very secure grip, induction hardened edge for high sharpness and retention.
I bought mine last simmer in the US, only to find Tony had reviewed one in March!

Has anyone seen these?

RAZOR EDGE BASIC CARVING KIT

Thinking of something like it as a present for someone, looks like a nice idea, does anyone knows anything of them?

Looks interesting but changing the blades could be a pain. It seems as though you have to use a spanner-type thing to ensure that the chosen blade stays in place - not so great for a quick switch around.

Yeah, on one hand it’s an interesting idea but on the other, like you say.
