I've just managed to blag a couple of wartime wool blankets off the mother-in-law but I want to dye them a darker colour than the existing cream/beige.

Anybody suggest a good permanent dye please ?

:)

Anything but green! There are hundreds of people running about the woods looking like a fitness guru from the 80's! Brown would be a better option, dirt won't show up so easy!

Just a thought - you may want to see how easily they will dye before buying loads of dye - I tried to dye a wool jumper from that 'creamy white' colour to dark green and despite following the instructions exactly only managed to get to 'creamy/white with a hint of very light greeny tinge'.

I had searched on the internet but various websites were decidedly non-commital when it came to wool - so I gave it a go.

Not sure if anyone more expert can advise but I thought I'd share my failure . . .:(

It may have been your jumper still had a residue of natural lanolin, wools' natural weatherproofing, that would have stopped the dye from adhering to the wool. Wash your wool with pure soap and no conditioner before dyeing and it should fix onto the wool. You can reproof afterwards in two ways, either re-wash with tonnes of fabric conditioner or throw a cap full of baby oil into the washing machine on the final rinse cycle.
