Hey

I am going on a trip soon with a few people. Unfortunately, most of them except me are disabled in some form. This means I can't really walk more than 5 or 6 miles in. I am looking for a bothy within 5 miles of a road/train station, preferably accessable by public transport. Anyone have any ideas? The best bothy I ever stayed at was Culra, although this is too far a walk for all of them. The closer to Inverness the better. Last time, we stayed at a bothy near achnashellach, but a change would be great. Anyone have any ideas? A place with a stove/fireplace would be awesome.

Is Ryvoan any good? I've never been in it, is it very crowded?

Thanks alot.

It's certainly an easy and short walk to Ryvoan bothy.

When I was last there it was very comfortable and had a good fireplace. We had carried in our own fuel.

Second the above. MBA a worthy cause and worth joining. Only about £14 i think.

Cullra might be a bit of a trek from the railway line, we reckoned it was about 11 miles last time i did it, but i'm sure if you asked the estate very nicely you could take a 4x4 pretty much all the way up to the bothy front door. And remember to take a few lumps of coal or a bag of charcoal, wood hard to find up there.

The MBA is too much money for me to be honest. I do have a copy of the locations of the bothies from a friend's MBA book, but there are a lot in there and some of them are rubbish, one in particular ended up being a small shed in which the door fell off and hit a friend on the head knocking him unconcious. I was looking for personal recommendations of good bothies.

I love culra, yep, firewood is hard to find. Last time we scoured far and wide to find some decent bog pine, left the place packed with it. Next time I'm up at culra I think we'll just walk the 3 miles each way to the nearest forest for firewood.

Part of the work that the MBA does is to maintain the bothies, therfore the more paying members, the more that gets done towards the upkeep of them.
