when buying sleeping bags ...

Should one ask how long it's been sat in its compression sac and if it's been compressed?

Seems like people really do care that the bag is not stored compressed. I just wonder how long the manufacturer, wholesaler and vendor keep them stored and in what state.

PS I'm looking at a Softie 9

Jep, you should. Especially with down.
I don't know about your Softie, but I do know Alpkit stores their sleeping bags uncompressed and also sends them out in their big cotton storage bags. I'd be surprised if other "serious" companies would stock them compressed since it could ruin the loft of the down...

I just spoke to a nice gentleman in an outdoor shop. He says that all synthetic bags come rolled in their bags (but not compressed) from the manufacturer. He recommends storing open in a pillow case or net then stuffing them to avoid creasing. Down ones should come in a big bag and be kept that way until use.
