......I also believe that it's not just because you practice an art, you are an artist.

couldn't agree more with that.

i think art's a very difficult thing to define, i know that i certainly can't do it. i think that my definition of art is pretty broad. as you say, we all have our own opinions, but that's great because it allows us so much more space for what we like individually.

Besides truly good art needs skillfull design and craft to come to fruition, while art only enhances design......:D

cheers,

Toddy......looking for cover :D

surely it's more a case that truely good craft needs skillfull designed fruit to become art.........wait a second, i've baffled myself there

A stencil such as the banana could be done with a craft knife and a sheet of card from a breakfast cereal box. It doesn't need to use parchment or linseed oiled card for something like that. Spray mount on the other side, slap it on whatever you want to paint and spray. Peel off, and stick on again. S'easy. It also allows multiple and shading colours.
If you use a brush just don't overload it with paint, and stipple through the stencil.
I've made a lot of banners, pavement, fencepost and wall signs this way.

cheers,
Toddy

i get what you're saying, and i'm sure that you're right about the commercial stencil cutters, i've just never heard of such a thing to be honest...

They're most common in paint shops specializing in painting aircraft, race cars or military equipment. I used them almost constantly when applying the requisite stencils to powered flight-line equipment (ID #. weight, center of gravity, etc)

The stencil paper itself is avtually a two pieced tape (of whatever width is required) Once programmed, the cutter actually scores the top layer rather than cutting it. The you go to the object to be stenciled and peel off the back layer to expose the adhesive. Next you align and stick the now adhesive stencil to the object and peel out the scored areas and apply paint. Then all you need do is remove the stencil.

They're also available here at commercial paint shops (the type that sell paint and supplies to commercial painters) so that do-it-your-selfers can buy the a pre-made stencil without buying a machine.

My mates that graf and do stencils take hours and hours cutting out original and well thought out designs by hand with an exacto knife. To them using a machine or special paper or downloading images would be cheating and not worthy of their time. I definately see them as artists.

You're right about the gang signs everywhere in North America Santaman, fortunately I don't see a lot of set signs here. You do see kids throwing up tags everywhere, to me that's not art, it's mindless vandalism when not done well. You tend to see crew tags round here instead of sets, the funniest I've seen is the BYS crew. Bum Yer Sister crew.

I'm not serious about graffiti, I'm too old to be bombing around town at ridiculous o'clock with silver fingers and far too slow to be running from rail police. I'll leave that to the shorties.

Shame it's happened to a tree in a special location Jonathon, hopefully it won't take long to weather away. It certainly is weird!

i saw a banksy the other day, it was in london the day after my cousins wedding, the one where a kids painting over a gang tag, looked really cool, plus we happened to bump into one of the people who put the perspex up over it to stop other people vandalising it, was really interesting
