What knife and why?

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I always carry a SAK (huntsman). It's perfect for my everyday cutting tasks. I don't need supersteels for a knife that will be used for a day. If it gets a lot of use at 1 day it can be sharpened. It doesn't have to be sharp for a week.

Me too.

I would change the knife laws, so I can carry my Leatherman.

Mora, and Billhook, perfectly happy with. Cannot knock over a 1000 years of field testing. Ok, maybe not but the mora design been around long time.

Mora 106.

It's small, thin and does the fine intricate tasks much easier than a 4mm thick Woodlore type knife. I usually have a saw and either an axe or a leuku with me for heavier work anyway, so I don't need a bigger knife.

SAK Soldier is the only thing I would consider as an everyday carry; however, as I live in Glasgow it's frankly not worth any hassle. I'm highly unlikely to need it commuting to work and there are tools at work in case. Common sense approach.

If out in the hills hiking, still probably a Leatherman is the only thing I'd consider. Yes, I am aware of legalities but, frankly, I can explain why I'm carrying a Skeletool (kit repair).

For bushcraft activities, often have an old Mora that I practice sharpening on at home and use for gardening and the like. However, for pleasure of use, practicality and feel, an SBT is hard to beat in my opinion (especially with a Dougster custom sheath!). Doesn't come out unless it's a day's activities planned in a place where people are not going to get 'spooked' by it. Indeed, I often find it is better kept in a pack pouch or jacket pocket than 'on show' on the belt.

i carry my heavily modded BCNW01, or Northwest, for me its the whole package, compact, strong, glides through wood like a dream, battons brilliantly, looks and feels perfect in the hand...

what would i change? Nothing.

All I've got is a Mora training knife, for practicing carving and fire lighting in the garden and my good old faithful SAK which goes with me to work each day and gets used, many times, on those days. My SAK is one of my most important tools for work.:)

I use one of Rogers knives, a 4mm woodsman. A neat package, and pretty much covers all my needs, especially useful for carving. It takes any amount of abuse that i throw its way.
I do wish i had bought a 3mm though, as i have ordered a Bushcrafter from Bernie Garland for the bigger tasks, when i want to leave my axe at home.
