Oh, I though s**t bags grew on trees!

As for litter @TeeDee I'm with you. We live down a single track road with a few passing places. One of those pacing places has a spectacular view down the valley. Someone parks there and eats their lunch on a regular basis and just dumps the packaging and cans out of the window. They clearly appreciate the view but think it's OK to trash the place!

However, until we stop the farmers leaving silage bags, feed bags, rusting vehicles, old tyres, and the rest all over the countryside, I can't see how we can persuade the visitors not to drop their litter :(

I suspect the overlap on the Venn Diagram for 'Dog poo leavers' and 'People who throw litter out of their car' is pretty large. Of course, it's symptomatic of a larger problem, which is a lack of social cohesion and perceived social responsibility, as well as social consequences no longer being such a deterrent as most people are no longer embedded in smaller communities, but much larger ones spread about the place.

One thing I will say is that in the first two posts of this thread, there were just as many decent people in each story who did the right thing and held the poo-leavers accountable for their actions.

I've said it before, but I think it's worth reiterating.....service dogs relieve themselves in a regular routine, some (guide dogs) with a specific word or command....they're healthy, they're happy, they are just taught to go when it's in an appropriate place....not on a public footpath or park or someone else's garden.

Why don't other dog owners train their dogs properly ?
How can they train a dog when they are incapable of training themselves?

As a dog owner it does annoy me to see where someone hasn’t picked up a jobbie or worse, is walking away from a fresh one. Maybe if it’s a kid walking the dog, but even then, no need for it.

That said, beaches covered with idiots and having a great shortage of bins, what’s the point in fines for littering when there are no facilities for disposal.

After all, if we can train children to 'go before you leave', why don't more folks train their dogs ?

The problem is many people do train their dogs. They are trained to go whilst on a walk so the owner does not have to tidy anything up. It wasn't unusual to see people drive out to the forestry areas where I used to live, open the boot, let dog do their business and then put them back in and drive home. Many people shouldn't have dogs, or other responsibilities.

I wouldn't be against a dog licence if it was enforced for everyone but it wouldn't be and the worst offenders would just carry on.

How about this: Legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped and DNA profiled (this costs about £40) which is matched to the microchip details. Then if dog poo is left, a swab gets sent off by a dog warden and the offending dog owner gets a fine in the post (which covers the cost of running the matching DNA test + a punitive fine).

My friend installed stock fencing along side the footpath that runs down the side of his field.

People complained to the council because they had always had the run of it for walking their dogs. Many had left **** everywhere. Once the fence was up some of those who did bag it threw it into the field or hung it on the style. I thought that took special effort to be disgusting.
This happened to us! We bought a small piece of land, fenced it off and started clearing/ tidying the land (yes, lots of dog poo & poo bags). Some people started complaining (not to the council, just around the village) that they used to walk their dogs through there. Now people throw their dog poo bags over onto the land.

Is it possible that the chip can monitor bowel movements, and then upload the GPS data to a website? Find a poo, take a phot on your phone with GPS coordinates enabled, upload the photo, automatic fine sent to dog owner.

It's not just dog poo, parking is also an issue. Yesterday..and this has happened many times with similar response.. I was accompanying a lady who uses a mobility wagon. As we got into town, there is an area near the supermarket that has double yellow lines, a dropped curb and a white line. So no parking at all allowed. A car(porche) drove up when we were halfway across the road, and inserted themselves into this spot, preventing the lady from being able to get up on the curb to be able to access the supermarket. I approached the driver, and explained that they were not allowed to park there and that they were leaving a vunerable person in the road with no access to the pavement. The reaction was.."so what?"
After further attempts to get him to move, , several insults and total rudeness, I waa called a moron.
This was a rather well off, older person..not local, who decided he had priority over a disabled lady, and felt that it was alright to insult someone asking them politely to park correctly and allow disabled acess., so I photographed his car and numberplate and have sent it to the local parking warden. That's when I got called a moron.
My reply was,
I'm afraid sir, you have got your name muddled up with mine.!
We often get people " come down for the shoot" who seem to think they are better than the locals, and treat them with contempt. Not all, I'll admit. Disgusting entitled attitude.
Makes my blood boil!

Licences have been replaced by dog chipping, a UK legal requirement now over 8 weeks old, up to a £500 fine. This came about due to the number of aggressive dog attacks, and owners who actively "trained" or encouraged this. The idea/intention is that if a dog atttacks someone the owner is traceable and can be prosecuted for keeping a dangerous dog.

However, due to lack of registration vigilance, too many of the criminally inclined give a false address or find other ways around it.
The problem with all of this is the resource effort needed to enforce it, including court time/processes. Police might challenge a known troublemaker about his dog if they think it is a threat, but otherwise simply cannot spare the time.

Question- If dog ownership is nothing new (?) - was dog mess as much of an issue back back in the day? 50s? 60s? 70s? -

I can't ( I know ) they didn't have dog waste bags back in the day and I assume there was an equal amount of dog owners back then? So what has changed that we notice this more? Or am I missing something- yes population was less but is this a modern day issue or something we just seem zoned in on?

I'm just trying to get my head around if its actual values that have declined in people? or do we find more reason to be offended in something that was already a thing?

In my teens I lived in a town in Yorkshire - quite frankly the pavements were disgusting. I was a big roller skater, let's just say my slalom techniques were perfected :)

< I'm just imagining what I think you look like , in roller skates.... going to add shorts and a colourful tank top in there to finish my image >

From my memory it was bad in the 80s/early 90s then a successful bag campaign seemed to sort it for a bit but that seems to have fizzled out.

So now we notice it more if that makes sense.

On my walk to the station at 0600hrs everyday there is fresh poo at the same pavement point, so clearly part of someone’s routine. There is often several days worth

Don't get me started on parking!

Also, central beacons and brecon mountain rescue teams had a similar altercation only a couple of weeks ago during a multiple casualty call-out with someone who had parked across an access gate at the bottom of Pen y Fan, and received some abuse from the car owner when they told him to move!
